We live in MN, wolf country.  They have never bothered our horses, but cows are another matter.  They have started eating two of our cows while they were still alive.  Made me sick.  And as gas as them eating only the sick and weak, that's a joke, too.  They like entertainment, so chasing animals until they die is fun for them.  They will kill a deer, eat one or two internal organs and leave the rest.

Oh you are full of crap!!! They don't hunt for fun... They hunt to eat... They will NOT run down a deer for a snack!!! Do you have any idea how many miles they have to go to run a deer to death??

Lots of wolves in your neck of the woods there, Komet?

Down here? No, but we had our share up in Idaho... BTY I worked for a retired Idaho Fish and Game warden while I was there... They did Raptor Rehab and I learned much about wolves and other wildlife from him.

Hmmmm.... I am not very impressed by the conservation agents or fish and game employees I have run up against. They will spread whatever misinformation their office tells them to.

Well they tried him for 1st degree murder of 2 law enforcement officers but could only get him for manslaughter because of Pugue's reputation as an a$$hole with a badge... Then after he escaped prison and was recaptured they tried him for escape and he was acquitted because he proved the guards were trying to have him killed because he only got manslaughter.

Remember your comment about how things should be the way they used to be? Well this is a story right out of the early 80s and that's how it used to be. Only this time LEOs got caught doing wrong and it was proven in court.

A rancher close to where we are had 48 calves killed by wolves a couple of years ago, as well as a couple of cows and bulls didn't come home off range. There was a pack of approx 9 or 10 wolves. That is a lot of beef for that many dogs to eat if they aren't sport hunters. I realize there are also other opportunists that come along and eat on it too. We found one of our calves on range with a big hole chewed out of his butt and managed to get him home and save him, we have cows missing tails, have mysteriously not had a couple of calves come home. Wolves? The elk and moose population in the area is decreasing. A logger I know was followed and surrounded, but made it back to his truck and there was a forestry worker also in the area who thankfully had her dogs with her and the wolves surrounded her, her dogs went after the wolves and she was able to get to her truck, but one of the dogs was killed. I would be very careful if they are coming that close to your house and barn. get rid of them if you can.

I added my two cents in here then deleted it, but maybe I better rephrase it so I can live with it.  Here goes...

I did quite a bit of research for Joseys Mountain since it touches upon this subject.  You don't have to be if you use common sense.

To make a claim that a wolf won't hunt for sport because it expends too much energy running down a prey isn' t giving the full picture.

Wild prey know to run.  They have developed instincts.  Domesticated stock isn't half the opponent to a wolf.  So once it finds how easy it is to go after domesticated stock, that's what they will do.  They are highly intelligent and once you have an issue you almost can't get rid of it.

I've been asked why I didn't wrap that portion of the plot line up within the novel and the easy answer is because there is NO way to end it and still remain on the good side of the law.

Good luck if you're dealing with this.  It's a huge problem and its a touchy subject.  People are strongly passionate about this.  So...take it easy if you can.

Supertrooper and I both live in northern ontario. She I believe is closer to you turn I am. I'm in the Sault Ste. Marie area. I do have wolves around and bears. Knock on wood I have never had a problem with either. My guys are in a herd and have always been outdoors and they know how to defend themselves. I have one that's killed coyotes and will kill a stray dog that goes in the field. Bears just seem to stay away. I have had one attacked by a cougar before though and she was new and not experienced (she survived). If your worried keep them inside if I had a smaller herd and none of my aggressive ones I would.

All predatory animals are going to pose more of a threat as our countries develop more land, we are taking away their hunting grounds, and driving their prey to more adequate food.

I know in our area we are getting more of an influx of cougars even sightings in cities.

One thing I was told if you can hear the coyotes howl, then you don't have wolves or cougars in the area as these two chase away the coyotes. Around my place I see this to be true with cougars.

I have also been told that both wolves and coyotes complete a 21 day cycle, so if you see them on your place they generally won't be back for 21 days. I know this is true for cougars as the past 2 years every 21 days my quiet well behaved horses were jumping on top of me if a twig broke in the trees.

I do suggest paying attention to the behaviours of your horse, as they will tell you when they are near, also pay attention to other wildlife.

If you do put them in a barn, make sure it is impenetrable as it would be slaughter if the wolf ever made it in, grizzled bears in our area are more known for going into houses or barns.

The other thing is speak with fish and wildlife and make sure they are not protected, as it could be jail time if you shoot one, more if you do the triple s and get caught.

If they are protected, I know in Alberta if they are a threat to human safety, they will sedate and relocate.

Good luck

What's the S.S.S method? I think I've got the shoot on site but I'm missing the last "S" .

We are now living near Fort Frances and I've been told the township will compensate for wolf kills of livestock. I'm not interested in being compensated, my husband has no issues killing them first. I will have to see if we are allowed to shoot them but just as a precaution. I didn't think to ask that.

About a half a mile down the road I found out that the wolves come up into their yard and snag their goats but they've had no problems with the horses. Probably because the goats are a lot easier to grab for now. I heard a pack of them the other night and darn if I could sleep all night. I cannot wait until I have the barns set up properly and I will make sure they are secure. Moving sure has been a change in what we are used to!
