| My guy has been sick the past week with a snotty nose and a cough. I didnt think much of it at first before I heard him coughing pretty bad when I tried to work him. I felt like a completely bad mommy! His cough sounds like its in his chest and his boogies are more thick and sticky rather than runny.
I have been giving him Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim tablets twice a day the past few days. He has been stalled and kept out of the rainy weather we have been having lately. His appetite still seems fine. He hasnt had any recent changes with anything so im thinking it may have a lot to do with this weather we have been having.. rainy then hot and humid, on and off. That and possibly some dusty peanut hay that he may have gotten.
Anyone have any other suggestions to help him? Do you normally just have to let something like this pass and let them ride it out? How long do you wait before having the vet out?
Thank you for any help! I just want him better!

Location: lone star state | I would go to vet for something stronger that goes with the smz. Also you can give dexamethazone to help clear lung inflamation.

Location: Lost in the swamps | Just went thru this 3/4 weeks ago, gelding started with cough, snot nose, slightly elevated respirtory rate,no fever, eating well,I live in south la, we have been having a lot of rain, he had an abscess I was tryig to heal after the vet had to dig It out and the weather wasn't helping, my own stalls flooded so I had to rent my neighbors barn, which has very little air flow, no electricity, and prob hasn't had a horse in it in a few years, but it was dry and had no other option , few days later the coughing and snot starts had him scoped after the uniprim and dex wasn't helping. and blood pulled. Scope showed mucus(obviously) and blood showed infection. So he gave me 5 days of gentamycin and 5 of smz and stay on the dex and slowly wean off. He is better but stil has a residual cough now and again, rep rate has gone back to normal, temp always normal. Mucus is clear, not white or yellow like it was.

| He is actually already on a low dose of dex, has been for some months now reccomended by vet because of how bad his summer itch and allergies are. It was a choice of having a miserable horse, or a happy horse and possibly take a couple years off his life in the end. I chose happy horse because of how miserable he was. We also had to change his whole feed routine as come to find out he is allergic to every hay except timothy or peanut, and also allergic to corn, soybean and rice bran..which is in most feeds so he is on beet pulp, oats and timothy pellets.
Yep, he's one of THOSE horses lol
I just got a call back from my vet, he said that he has actually had to treat a few horses the past few weeks for these symptoms around here..and recommended that he come out and take a look at him and possibly give him a immune shot or so to help him get through it.

The weather has been horrible here!!! SOSOSO hot and then all the rain making it super humid. I thought that maybe from being wet/cold to hot/humid maybe set it off but vet said that it isnt usually normal this time of year for colds so he is going to take a look at him.

| Mine was congested BAD, snotty and coughing. I gave him a penicillin shot two days in a row and the snott dried up in two days. Day three a little cough still but it's defiantly clerking up no snott. Watch the fever- will cause abscess in about two weeks. | |
