| OK, Looking at a 10 year old gelding. He is sound (Will take him to my vet to verify before purchase). I have copies of his papers and track record. He ran at Los Alamitos. He was born in 2004 and had 15 starts between 2006-2009. Had a couple 3rd place wins and won a total of 6,000 bucks. So not what I would call a real successful horse but is broke now with some potential to be a barrel/rope horse. I just have never bought a horse off the track, so I don't know what to look for? I was thinking about having vet pull blood to check for drugs before purchase as well. I was always told no more than 3 starts? Wives tale? Thanks! |

If so he will diffently need a "let down" period.
As for what you need to do train wise I think they are all different, some have a great handle others .... not so much lol.
As for the starts ours was hurt in his first start, then had a bunch more after he heeled. So really it dosent matter if they had one or twenty, he could have issues or he could be pefrectly fine only a vet check can tel you if hes sound and issue free. |

If he hasn't started since '09.... I wouldn't consider him 'off the track'. What's he been doing in the 5 years since?

I can't pull up Equibase right now, but the breeding is very sweet. I'd like to look at his races, distances, who raced him, etc. I'll try again tomorrow. |

Location: DUMPING CATS AND PIGS IN TEXAS :) | Drugs used on him wouldn't still be in his system. If he has been retired from racing and is nicely broke, etc, now, it's doubtful he has any issues from the track. Get him Xrayed, but I've seen plenty of horses with that many outs have a successful second career. I have a mare with a lot more outs that retired 100% sound. Just depends, but it sounds like he is doing fine.
The pedigree is one I would really like to try as a barrel horse. Corona Cocktail looked like a barrel horse to me. |

Location: Pacific Northwest | My mare is 14, had 7 starts from the ages of 2-4 years old. She doesn't have any remaining "off the track" issues and is a really ratey barrel horse. Also super soft in the face and responsive to legs. Clocks in the 2D and would be in the 1D more often if I knew how to ride.

Location: Desert Land | Get him vet checked and you'll be good to go. Does he carry Blane's curb bit brand? I have always admired his program. |

Location: Central Texas | I just purchased two ottb in March of this year. They couldn't be more different in temperment and personality. I am enjoying training and learning from them both. One had 35 starts and he is by far the easiest to ride and handle, learned the pattern so quick. The younger one had 8 starts and needs a little more riding time. I was amazed at how quick they learn and their work ethic! |

| Thanks everyone. He is worth a shot I guess. He only wants 1,000 for him. Since being off the track he is primarily a trail horse and once in a while a pony horse at the track. |

 Am I really the Weirdo?
Location: Kansas | My two sorrels both ran on the track and are turning into pretty nice barrel horses. I think Clifford ran 7 or 8 times, completely sucked, then went into bulldogging training, flunked out of it, and wound up with me. He came on really quickly as a barrel horse because the bulldogger sent him to boot camp aka the feedlot and got him BROKE. Plus he already knew how to go to work every day and he darn sure knew how to run. The biggest thing for me was earning his trust and learning to work through or deal with his quirks. He was almost 9 when I started him on the pattern (Nov. 2012) and 6 months later, he won his first 1D check, so he climbed up the D's pretty fast.
Streak is a little different story. He was a more successful racehorse with a win and nearly $6,000 in earnings from his 10 starts. Then he wound up nearly starving to death before TurnLane rescued him early last year. He came to me in February not much beyond track broke, but he's now loping the pattern and trying to add speed on his own. He's 12 so is getting a late start in barrel racing but oh well.
Both of them are really into people. They are curious, want to go DO THINGS, and generally busy atmospheres don't bother them. They do have a tendency to not stand still, and they both have some nervous habits and silly quirks, but I really like them both and I think a lot of that is because they're so friendly and excited to do stuff, even if its just go for a trail ride. They are used to having a job and doing things daily because of the track experience. |

Location: Winging It in KY | I was very leary too on my purchase last fall. He was then 3 and had started 16 times, made almost $26K on the track. I looked at him in Sept 2013 and he was a perfect gentleman to be around. I just couldn't get past the 16 races, wasn't sure if I really wanted to deal with it. Two months later, I got tired of looking for the perfect horse, called the girl that had him, asked if she still had him and picked him up the next day. BEST DECISION I HAVE MADE IN A LONG TIME!!! He was and is so easy to train. He is very level headed and tries to please. Just got done placing in a futurity with him and he just keeps getting better. Very turny and hunts a barrel. My advice, if he vets out and you get a good feeling about him, buy him. Good luck. |
