I remember as a kid someone told me about the sworls on the neck... if they were even with eachother on both sides of the mane it meant they had a more balanced temperment. Horses with a sworl say by their ears and then one by in the middle of the neck would typically be harder to train... The closer to the ears, the more intelligent. But a horse with even sworls in say the middle of the neck meant maybe they werent overly intelligent but gently natures.
Now this was about 20 years ago when I learned all this, Ill have to see if I can find an article. I remember us proving it true with my friends naughty mare but aside from that i cant remember.

I have often heard that a swirl on the forehead that was lower and more even with the eyes ment an intelligent/good horse.
