I have played around with going soy free. I have fed oats and equipride then have gone back to commercial feed because I felt it was easier. I feel my horse felt better on the soy free diet.
Those of you that feed soy free diets can you give me an example of what you feed? What do you do about getting enough protein.
this is for a horse that competes multiple times over a weekend.
Thanks

I don't know if technically soy free is that great or not so great but aren't there a lot of non processed feeds that are not soy based? Why not work with your elevator or find a nutritionist that could help you come up with a concoction? For me I would think oats, barley, rice bran, flax, alfalfa would be at the top of the list-seems simple enough to me. As with any diet, you have to make sure you're getting enough to the horse. Heck I know many on here never feed a grain like oats or barley. They utilize alfalfa pellets or beet pulp and then add flax or rice bran to the mix along with good quality grass hay. I think the "binders" in many commercial grains is soy oil so read the bags.

Right now I'm feeding a mix of the following to my stallion and hope to get a ton of it mixed soon.
1 lb Stance Coconut meal
1 lb rice bran
.5 lb Boss
.5 lb flax
2 lbs oats
2 oz Comega oil
and a mineral specifically for my area.
I also feed 20-25 lbs 14% protein grass/alfalfa mix
ETA: the grain mix comes out to 14.4% protien and 15.6% fat
I am getting the mix and my hay tested so I can get a 100% custom mineral mixed.
