I'm the proud new owner of a yearling, but have never owned this young of a horse before.

What should I be feeding her so she gets all the right vitamins and nutrition?

Right now, I am just feeding her straight grass hay, no grain.

Should I be feeding any grain? Alfalfa?

Total protein of the entire diet needs to be around 15%. You may need to add some alfalfa to a straight grass hay diet to get the total there. GroStrong minerals from ADM and 1/2 pound of Renew Gold per day, and you are good to go.

Mine gets timothy pellets in the morning, free choice bermuda, on 24/7 pasture, and safe choice with Adeptus Augment (vitamin/mineral supplement) at night.

Quality pasture 24/7, hay available all the time and Tribute Kalm n Ez with Essential K twice a day, plus loose vit/min free choice.

I don't feed a lot of grain but I do feed some to make sure they're getting what they need.

foals need more protein than other horses.  Find a good protein source plus excellent quality hay.  I prefer woodys futurity blend because there is a very small amount of feed needed for a yearling-there stomachs are small.  Mine also get a vitamin/mineral supplement (mvp) and 1/2 cup flax per day.  If they are looking a little tough they will also get a flake of alfalfa daily.  Nothing too heavy but what you feed them should be good for what they need-no junk.

My little one is on Total Equine, free choice coastal/bermuda round bale, small flake of alfalfa once a day and is growing like a weed:)

I've had great results with quality pasture & alfalfa/grass mix hay and a mineral block....have never fed my youngsters grain. We just got a weanling and he will get hay and mineral this winter.

we feed a 14% feed and then grass hay and some alfalfa. You don't want to short them on protein at this stage in development. If you are just feeding pasture and mineral I suggest testing your pastures to know what they are getting from it.

14% protein grain.  3 cans of grain a day size #10 can, some call it a gallon can.
