| My husband and I want to find a couple different charities to donate to this year. Thought I'd put some feelers out there for suggestions and ideas.
We'd really like to give to an organization that helps kids (youngsters that aren't old enough to help themselves) and we want the majority of donated money to go directly to the persons/animals in need. None of this "50% goes to administration costs".
Any ideas? |

It's called backpack buddies and the purpose is to provide backpacks of food to kids who would not eat on the weekends without it. All the kids have been identified by the teachers or counselors, so it's not people mooching off the system. |

We are trying to get a program similar to that started in our elementary school.
My friend and I put on a free meal for the whole community once a month and have access to tons of free food from a food bank. My sister works at the elementary school so between the two of us we're hoping to get this started soon.

We have something similar here. Unfortunately it seems to be very needed in my community. |

| Our county just started this and it's wonderful and I suggested to a local delegate about opening the schools during holidays & summer so those kids can get something warm to eat once a day and it's been passed! I was so excited because I know there are a ton of kids that go hungry and it's a shame. |

| My sister has been working in the elementary school for a few years and is alarmed at the number of kiddos who go home to empty cupboards. It just makes my heart ache.
We're trying to put together a system where I supply them with food and they make sure it goes through the proper channels. Some of the families don't have ovens so we need to have a variety of foods for them.

Location: lone star state | St jude is one of the best! 100 percent of donations go to the kids.
Research whatever charity you choose and see where those donations really go. America would be shocked and sickened at the largest known charities and where the money really goes.
You should have a local CASA or child welfare board - there are a record # of kids in foster care today.
CASA also desperately needs volunteers. Talk about rewarding! A child who has no voice or advocate has no chance of escaping abuse or the state system once becoming a statistic. And talk about making you thankful for everything you have... go help a child who has absolutely nothing....you will take nothing for granted anymore. |

Location: lone star state | Roanrider what an amazing thing to do! People assume that when they donateto food banks they do their part however those who need it the most are not getting this food! I have been in countless homes in my community that have no food! Our country has a major food distribution problem... |

Location: MI | Kids food basket in Grand Rapids is a pretty great one. They provide sack lunches and dinners I think to the inner-city kids. |

Location: Illinois | First, thank you for making donations!
I am on the local Boys and Girls club board of directors, so I have a little experience with that organization and it has opened my eyes up to how things work with charities. We do a lot of fundraising on our own and all of that money goes and stays with our Boys and Girls club. I would suggest donating locally (or something like St. Jude where you KNOW all money goes to what you think it does). Along with the Boys and Girls Club, we also have a CASA in our county that does great things for the kids in the court system, we have a Crisis Nursery in our area, many local woman's programs that help outfit ladies going on job interviews, things like that. There is also a wonderful program in my county ran by a wonderful couple and their son (who is a trained counselor) that helps kids who have behavior issues and they do therapy with horses teaching them compassion, understanding and just sometimes having a positive role model. So maybe see if there are any things like that in your area and just give directly to them?
