I really do not understand people's reasoning on this at all... I have had a couple people wanting to trial something, right now a saddle, but they want to pay me in a check and post date it. I have had someone else want to do the same thing with a horse I was selling. This person was a lawyer and ended up getting angry with me that I would not accept a check and wanted cash only even though I assured them they'd get their same money back if the horse was brought back. They just act like I am trying to scam them, but I don't understand their reasoning at all? You took the item away from me and I am left with nothing but a check that I don't even know if its any good! They could take the horse/saddle anywhere and I'd never see it or my money again. I donno I just don't feel comfortable without cash in hand... maybe I am just too paranoid?

I don't think you are paranoid, everyone wants/needs to protect their self.  I guess they feel they would have an easier time getting a check back rather than cash if they don't want the item.   I am picking up a horse today to try.  If I like it I am going to leave a check pending passing vet check tomorrow.  I don't know the seller but we have a very good friend in common that makes us both comfortable with this arrangement.

I'd feel differently if I at least somewhat knew these people, but they are complete strangers and I have no idea where they even live if I needed to go find my saddle

Nope you are not! When I bought my gelding I paid cash and since I lived seven hours away she agreed to returning the money when I brought him back if he didn't pass the vet check but thankfully he did. I asked around about the seller and got nothing but really good feedback.

I bought a used saddle over the Internet not too long ago, had to wire her the $$ before she would ship. We exchanged pics of our drivers liscense so at least had that info. I know someone could fake that too.

You are not wrong to feel this way.....you can not be too careful these days. We live in the era of "scammers". Cash only and write up a "contract" to cover them if they should want to return it. BUT include a provision for any damage if that should happen.

Honest people dont get angry about purchasing conditions. These are stated as part of the purchase and those are the terms. If you do not like those terms as a buyer then go someplace else its probably not the right horse for you. As a seller I don't want my animals going someplace I think is not best for them either.
I usually set a reasonable date or time frame when selling a horse such as 72 hours or 7 days. This gives the buyer time to try out the horse vet check etc. horse is paid for before leaving. If i dont hear from the purchaser within the end date then the purchase is final and the money is mine and horse belongs to them.

I have found that in life people who accuse and state false things in anger are usually spewing what's really in their heart not anyone else's.

A word of caution never ever give anyone else you identifiers such as a driver's license or social security card. These can be used for a variety of scams the worst being in contact with law enforcement. People get arrested all the time and give someone else's drivers license. This attaches to your record and can be very costly and difficult to remove from your record and cause you to be arrested for a crime you know nothing about....

Good point about exchanging ID, guess I am lucky my deal worked out- I did not even think about identity theft.
