I've actually never ran at a race with a dress code so I haven't had to run with a hat for a very long time. On rodeo court we had to use bobby pins and I HATED THEM, they hurt my head SO bad and I'd have a headache for days. If I ever get to run at a real race or rodeo I would most likely use a stampede string if I thought my hat might fall off.
The person with the clear elastic strap has a very good idea though, I never would have thought of that.

Stampede string wearers unite! You will see my dorky hat at the glen rose qualifier...and if I make a fool of myself there it won't be because of my hat. And I also wore my goofy strings when I filled my WPRA permit and won my pro rodeos...glad they didn't hold my money because of my looking uncool.

This would be a great question for all the top NFR ladies who run in all kinds of weather conditions. They rarely lose their hats. They are running in a variety of weather elements. Most imprtantly....they do that while going really fast. So anyone know what works for those ladies? Sherry Cervi? Brittany Pozzi? Maybe Brenda Mays' mom will see this and provide some tips that work foe Brenda.

I wear one... I have a custom made hat that hubs bought me. It cost $650!!! I don't want it hitting the dirt. Yup, I think it would stay on, but I just don't want the distraction of worrying about it falling off. I don't give a rip about the "cool" factor. I care more about making a run without distractions. :-
