Extreme Veteran Posts: 429 Location: Oxford, Kansas	I just picked up a severely emaciated mare to rehab but she is covered in rain rot and it's way to cold now for a bath.. Ideas on what I can do to help her? I do have her started on Forco but doubt that will be enough to completely heal her up..

Any skin issues from gunk to rain rot sores or serve bug bite allergies I have cleared up with calm coat. Plus no nasty smell, it smells clean and fresh. I Need a Xanax! Posts: 2774	2 tablespoons per day of plain old iodized salt in their feed every day....rain rot will be gone in 2 weeks. Has worked for me every time. Cost 47 cents at Walmart. Must be iodized salt...not regular salt.

Expert Posts: 3782 Location: Gainesville, TX	There's a feed through antifungal and/or antibiotics for rain rot. That will help immensely. I would also think, if you can't give her a bath, some of the oil based suggestions on here that will kill off the fungus/bacteria will help tremendously. You won't have to give her a bath and the oil can loosen up the yucky yellow scabby stuff and kill the little bugs. I do know most cases are anaerobic so getting under the scabs is important.

Posts: 6343 Location: Cap'n Joan Rotgut.....alberta	i feed flax all the time and still get rain rot....we actually never had rain rot til the so bought a horse from billings and then it went crazy at our place..and we start seeing signs of it now usually and fight it til march or so...and we have tried supplements and minerals of all kinds and it will work on some but others nadda.......and now we are battling these small granual bumps(from the size of a pin head to dime size) that are all over the horses body......it looks like rain rot but on a way smaller scale and its all over the belly and sides and neck...blah ..... m
