A friend of ours has an older ex-rope horse he wants to give us for our daughter. The horse is a 19 year old gelding but he has a swayback. Our daughter is three and will only be riding this horse for the next two years but I was wondering what others thought on the degree of sway. I'll try to post a picture of one that my husband says is comparable to the actual horse. Do you think it's too much? I have asked several other knowledgeable horse people personally and I am getting very mixed answers!

I couldn't load the picture off my phone but this what hubby said is comparable.

A good kid's horse is worth their weight in gold. If they pack your kid around reliably that horse will start to look like the prettiest thing in your pasture. Besides, as a three-five year old, she won't be placing that much weight on the horse. I'd be much less concerned with the conformation and more concerned with the temperament. Good luck, and if you get the horse, we want pictures!!

For such a little girl she is not going to be hurting him any, I would take him in a heartbeat for my 5 year grandbaby if hes a sweet boy and will take care of her. A kids horse is worth so much and if hes that then go for it.

My sister had a great barrel horse with a very swayed back..The kind that would make you stop and turn and look. He ran barrels until he was 25 and was one of the soundest horses ever.

My daughter's old barrel horse has more sway than the pictured one. She ran her for 2 years, as her "step up" horse, and that old mare has a heart of gold. She was so bad, that we had to put a large pillow, then a pad and her saddle. We got some really funny looks from people and when you pulled her saddle off people would really stare. But she wasn't in pain, and she loved her job! She's done and in retirement now, and when we load up to go somewhere she stands at the fence and talks to us, she still wants to go:) As ugly as her ourside is, her heart and soul are more beautiful to us than the best looking horse at a rodeo.

If the old rope horse takes care of her, he is priceless :)

A pillow! Wow that's a new one but something I'll keep in my book of tricks! I'm pretty sure this old guy will work. We're going to pick him up to try him tomorrow. He's been there done that including packing and dude string. I think he'll be perfect. I'll post pictures if we get him. Thanks everyone for your responses!

Make sure you use a rear cinch also, it helps keep the pillow in:) Can't wait to see pic's!
