What do you feed your momma horses? Do you feed it year-round?

I am looking at:

Triple Crown Growth $25/ bag. Bag says to feed 6-8lbs per day (has probiotics, vits, mins, good ingredient list) P14%, Fat10%, Fiber17%

Omolene 300 $17/ bag. Bag says up to 12.5lbs per day to lactating mares (does not have probiotics on guaranteed analysis) P16%, Fat6%, Fiber6.5%

SafeChoice Mare & Foal $17/bag. Bag says up to 15lbs per day to lactating mares (has probios, vits, mins- couldn't find ingredient list) P16% Fat7% Fiber15%

That is all I know of that I am considering at the moment. I would love to feed Triple Crown but I'm afraid it will be expensive. At 8lbs a day that's $125 per mare a month.

I guess my biggest question is if you feed any of the feed listed above, do you really feed that much if the horse also gets free choice hay and alfalfa 2X day?

We've never grained our broodmares. They are on pasture grass and foal in May when the grass is really good. Free choice hay is a biggie and I think alfalfa would be good too as you mentioned. I have never liked Omolene but have been pleased with Safechoice Perform so I think the Mare and foal would be decent too. Some don't like Nutrena, but ours always did good on the Perform and Orig.

thank you!

Yeah I wish I had free choice grass. We have to use round bales. We have grass a few months out of the year but our 10 acres doesn't last long. I'll do free choice on round bales and 1 flake (small bale) alfalfa per horse twice a day. That's what I saw work for the race ranch I worked at in TX. Figured I'd give that a try lol

We fed Patriot until our feedstore stopped carrying it because their supplier went out of business. So now everyone is on safe choice. After weaning we add calf manna to the foals feed to give them some extra protein without feeding a growth feed. They also get pasture and hay. we also add alfalfa if we need to.

I feed the Nutrena safechoice mare n foal to my broodies and babies and on up to yearlings. ...i feed alfalfa twice a day and free choice grass/coastal hay with it to them....the broodmares get it per label ...i know when they hit that last trimester of gestation maybe 2 months before foaling out i up the amount as the label recommends as well and i feed a good amount of alfalfa when they are lactating probably 2-3 flakes morning and night with it and the free choice coastal hay as well....but as far as the grain i probably at the most fed 10-12 lbs a day of it so 5 to 6 lbs each feeding...i get nervous with grain when feeding that much and didnt want to go much higher so i added more alfalfa to add calories and help with the amount of milk they produce...but i was real pleased with the results my mares all look great and so do my babies.
Whenever i have a real hardkeeper broodmare or weanling/yearling i feed em purina ultium growth per label..has a little more fat and such..but the price is high so i don't feed it to the entire herd....the nutrena mare n foal is good stuff and has shown to be worth the cost.

Depending on the year and condition of the mare, we feed Equine Senior or Omelene 300. When babies are eating on their own, they are put on Ultium Growth. Our mares are out on pasture with good grass or free choice coastal at all times. They are fat and happy and our babies have always looked great.
