| Hi all! I realize that I am opening a HUGE can of worms with this one, but I'm going to give it a go... What would be a great bit with a lot of bend and some 'whoa' to run in? I'm talking a step up from a loomis with a twisted 3 piece mouth piece. I realize that 'whoa' is something that really needs to be trained. I also realize that a good, broke horse should have a good stop in a simple snaffle and I am not looking for training advice.

Location: N Texas | I've gone through so many bits with my gelding and finally found the one that works awesome for him. I needed something that was light enough around the barrels, but strong enough to get him to stop at the end of a run. The bits I used with long shanks would make him stall out on the backside of the barrel, and a gag bit with chain mouth would not stop him at the end of a run. I finally found one that is a good combination of turn and stop, and it happens to be a cheap $25 bit from Tractor Supply. I spent money on more expensive bits (including an Ed Wright pretzel bit, which he HATED) and this one has been a perfect match. The short shanks aren't too intimidating, the three-piece mouth is comfortable for him, and the fixed mouth piece provides a good stop, but is light enough that he maintains momentum around the barrels.

| I was going to try something very similar to that one...My mare needs something light but I need the stop at the end of the run like you mentioned so this might work. I was thinking about a professionals choice derby bit with a similar mouth piece. I run her in a Stiver hack now and if I get too heavy with my hands she starts tossing her head and I loose all control after that point. I ride her in a loomis at home but I don't think that would be enough 'whoa'. Thanks!

Location: North Dakota | I am loving my Britany Pozzi Long shank, three piece lifter. Now you may not need the long shank, but I believe they make a shorter shanked version of it. I've got pinky finger control for rate and I'm loving it!! |

I second this....Ed's bits just seem to fit my hands. They are my go to after an o ring. That being said, I like the short shank and the long shank but i've yet to have a horse I can run in the medium.....go figure. |
