I am having an issue getting our colt to break at the poll and give to the bit. e just bought him and he is very green and has been started late. He wasn't handled much at all until we bought him a month ago. I have done a bunch of much needed ground work with him and you can finally pick up his feet now. However, as I have started riding him I have noticed that he pushes against the O Ring Snaffle bit I have in his mouth and doesn't like to break at the poll. I have worked him in our round pen and tied the reins between his legs and up over his back to help him learn to give. He doing better but I'm still having issues with him wanting to stop very quickly when I am on him and pushing against my hands. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Do you have any one that can help keep his feet moving while you're on his back in the round pen? Hoping this bump gets you some help :)

IMO, tying won't help much b/c you really have to time your release to get one soft. I would start with lateral flexion, lots and lots of left and right side, before asking him to break vertically. If you can get him soft (in the mouth and poll) laterally, you can then ask for vertical. Never take hold with both reins, but ask for lateral first, then when he tips his nose, block with the opposite rein and he should lower his nose (hold until he does, then make a big release.) If you pick up a soft feel like this enough, his poll and neck will also drop.

You need to start with lateral flexion. Once the horse understands to give to the left and right side separately it can give to your left and right hands together. And it's very natural for a horse that dosent understand the give to really push, espicaly when you use two hands (ask in for pole) because they have something to push on. When my colts get to pushing i ask for lateral flexion. You can even go left flex right left flex and so on and work smaller into a break at the pole vertical flexion on the tuffer ones once they understand lateral.

I start on the ground doing ground work with this, with this halter i will pick up one side and ask for thier face.

He sounds really green, just needs some time I'm sure he will ceatch on soon

 This exactly.

What we do with ours is getting a draw gag bit and tie him to each side in the round pen and trot them and lope them tied to their side - granted they are not super tight but it teaches them to give to the bit and the sliding gag action adds poll pressure and so they end up tipping the nose and dropping the head

We do both side and we tie straight back to really get the flex and lunge them like that again

All of ours are really soft and supple and I don't have to kill my back to get them light
