I went 15 years without having one lameness problem and boom 4 years ago it seems I haven't been able to have a horse more than a few days without something that causes the horse to be deemed to unsound to compete or only good as a broodmare...well guess what the new horse that passed her pre purchase exam now shows lameness and everything is pointing to SI.... does anyone have anything positive about this...I'm honestly getting ready to throw in the towel with horses all together my heart can't take it.

I have no experience with SI but I feel your pain! Im.41 and have horses my whole life, literally since I was a 1 year old. Never lameness issue and now seems like ALL my horses have issues! Lol. Hopefully my 3 year old is not going in the same boat. I am paranoid now and watch every step looking for stuff!

I'm so heart broken I wish any lameness problems I had were just like fusing hocks but so far I have 1 mental issue and 2 hip issues 1 resulting in being a broodmare and the other has the possibility of being managed but it's such a gray area I'm not sure it's worth it considering the state of my bank account...I had a new vet that is less skilled than my normal vet do the pre purchase exam and apparently that was a bad choice because she missed it when I caught it then I brought out my more experienced vet who confirmed...I'm so lucky the person I purchased her from is totally willing to take her back and refund me most of my money

Wow, you are lucky. It's nice to know there are nice people out there. Hope you find a sound horse soon. It's so frustrating!

Do you know exactly what is wrong with her SI? What does she do that makes you think SI?

My main barrel horse had a bad SI injury a few years ago. It is a long, slow healing process, but I got him back. Really have to stay up on maintenance!

One slip around a barrel or out in the pasture can cause soreness in the SI. My vet told me that it will not go away & has to be treated. However the treatment is pretty easy IMO. Massage & chiro & making sure they are in good shape can help keep it from happening. It's certainly not career ending & something that can happen to any horse.

My gray horse had his SI joints injected in late March. It made a difference, and once I fixed the other things that were sore on him, we've had a pretty good year. Not sure exactly when he injured his SI because I rodeo on him and we've crashed a few times over the years. I believe I was told after his injections that running him 2 weeks later was OK because the injections were done 3/31 and I ran him at Bonus Race Finals April 11th. I know several people who have had SI injections done and the horse has gone back to winning so I wouldn't think it is career-ending at all.

What is SI? Suspensory injury? Or something with the stifles?

I haven't had a sound horse, mentally or physically, in years. I've learned what they're all talking about when they say "maintenance." One of my guys has a suspensory injury now. In the old days, I would have wrung my hands and cried and laid him up for a year. Today I took him to the special lameness vet who injected the injury with the "magic stuff" that folks from all over come to him for. I'm almost up to a grand in this injury between my regular vet and the lameness guy, but the horse should be rideable in a few weeks and if all goes well, barrel racing in the summer. Another horse may or may not have navicular. X-rays inconclusive. He has heel pain and is not lame but stumbles. In the old days I would have cried and retired him. Navicular! Now I'm trying medicine. I may even denerve him down the road. Not saying you should keep a horse you just bought who has soundness issues, but if you find yourself stuck with one, a lot of it is fixable. I guess that's what they mean when they say you can get him "serviceably sound." And keep in mind. You're due for some good luck.

 SI -- Sacroiliac joint.

My 10 year old's hocks still haven't fused...I never want to deal with that again, or at least one that's too far gone with moderate arthritis and injections weren't lasting issue again..

I have a big gelding that has SI problems. He gets it injected twice a year, massaged, and adjusted whenever needed(usually every 3 months when I'm maintaining him correctly.) on top of some swelling under the navicular bone, that seems to be his only issues right now. The main issue with getting it injected, massaged, adjusted and feeling good is that he feels so good he goes out and parties and then gets everything all out of whack again. A helpful hint if you do take on this kind of issue, when someone comes out to mess with the SI's keep your horse on stall rest and long and low exercises for at least a week. I was spending so much money and was genuinely getting concerned. I was feeling that having all of this adjusting isn't normal and there is too much manipulation of the skeletal structures to be healthy. As of now he's good, it is a lot of maintenance but he is good and it works, that horse is too much fun for me so he is worth it, and he's my other geldings best buddy! :)

Dr. Wolfe in Farmington, NM is amazing. I'm not sure where you are but if you could make that trip it would be worth it.

Thanks Newracer. Sacroiliac joint. SI. No wonder why you are all abbreviating it. That's a hard one to spell!

My gelding had si soreness and he also failed nero tests and said low chronic kind we did u c davis test negative. Did dr. Ellerison, fla test did it gave me oroguin and did the treatment. He has no soreness he is better but how much i,dont know. As i have had one sinus infection and keep giving me same antibodics for 2 months, get a little better the worse. Well any way my horse is better he needs to reshod and see where we are at. But i have watched him move and i know he is better.
