HELP!!! I took in a dog, a beautiful AKC champion Shih Tzu. He is two years old, so cute, sweet and friendly! I already love him but, I'm about to kill him!  In the 10 days I've had him, he hasn't pooped outside a single time! He has NO IDEA why I am taking him outside 765 times a day! He has no desire to mark a tree, sniff around, or anything! I took him off lead, thinking that he was taught not to potty on leash, but that doesn't help. I have a small (8x8) pen that I've put him in, but he just jumps against the wire over and over and over...and never potties. He poops in his crate and will bark like a mad man until I come and clean it (and him).
I have tried skipping the crate training and letting him be with us in the house, but he will literally poop at your feet with no warning!
Peeing is not as much as a problem, he has gone outside a few times. But, I think it's more luck from me taking him out so often and less about learning that's where he's supposed to go.
This is so draining!!! Any one had success with one like this? Any tips or tricks? This guy deserves a chance, but I'm not sure I can take much more!!!

How big is his crate? Does he have a regular feeding time or does he eat free choice?

sit outside until he poops! as soon as he poops give him a treat, this will probably take you a really long time OR do something exciting outside, like go on a super fun and playful long walk with loads of treats, every time he eliminates go overboard on the praise for awhile so he really feels like going outside is the greatest thing ever. what do you do when he poops in the house?

He can turn around and lay down comfortably in his crate. It may be a little large, but not much.
He eats twice a day now. When he first came, he wouldn't eat at all, so I offered a lot more often.

Also, he is still intact, but is sterile (which is why he was unwanted). I plan to have him neutered, just need to get this figured out first!

I would try a smaller crate. most dogs need to poop about an hour after they eat. I agree with giving him a treat after he pottys outside.

I have stayed out for-stinking-ever with him! He just doesn't get it!  When he's on a leash, he trots around in his pretty gait, and when you stop, he throws this big, beautiful show dog stance. He dares not sniff a tree, or any other low-life act (LIKE POOP!) when he's on a leash!
Oh, and when he poops inside... I cry. And pick it up. And take him outside again. I have put some of his poop by a bush, but he doesn't notice.

Is he your only child? Does he have another doggie friend that is more well adjusted that could show him how it's done?

It sounds as though he just needs some "Re-programming" And that takes more than a couple of weeks.

I doubt the crate training is going to have any impact as he has shown he does not mind pooping in the crate. Show dogs do spend a lot of time in crates sometimes and he has gotten used to pooping there.

I know it isn't easy but you need to learn his "tells"....learn to know what he does just before he decides to poop. Watch him like a hawk. maybe sit with him on the couch and if he wants to get down take him out. put him off leash in the pen but stay in there with him. See if he will go off leash like that with you there so he isn't just wanting out of the pen.

This will take time. He sounds a bit brainwashed and it will just take some time. The light bulb will come on when he accidentally finally poops outside and gets praised to the moon. Don't give up on him just yet.

I used a doggy diaper on one had to wear it inside at all times. when i took it off "outside" I would say go potty... this helps now if i know i"ll be gone several hours i can tell my dog go potty and she"ll pee everytime and poop half the time. i don"t have messes in the house now.

She's a poodle and very naughty.
