Does anyone know what wild cause this/how to fix it? He is a 12 year old quarter horse. He will just randomly stop during the pattern and back up. He has been bet checked...very front endy.

I had a colt do this, and its was because the person that started him would give him no warning before he pulled him into the ground. So anytime you so much as flinched on him, he flew backwards. Eventually gained his trust, but he was messed up for a while. He did it for another 8 months from when I started riding him, so it could be a training problem. (Just a possibility)

I'd have to see it or know more about what's happening, but let's just say he's discovered a way to avoid working. When he stops, I'd bend him and get his front end moving, then start loping little circles right where he stopped. When he's gasping for air, lope up to your barrel and stop to rest. Walk a couple circles around it and then start the pattern over. I'm assuming he thinks going to a barrel and turning it is just too much work when he's not in the mood. He might start thinking differently about it when his escape turns into lots more work.
