| This is my friend's mare, she is at the vet and vet is consulting with A&M. They have owned her for approximtely 8 months, mare was in poor condition, very wormy, they got her the care she needed and mare looks great. A few days ago she stopped eating, 102 fever, trip to vet, could not find anything specific other that bilirum was high at 7 something. Meds and sent home for 2 days then back at vet because mare not doing well. Found enlarged liver and part of her lung is dead. Poisoning, mold, toxic exposure?? Thanks for your help.

Location: Texas | If she's at TAMU she will be in great hands. They have all the equipment and a bunch of boarded internal medicine vets there. She could have pneumonia because of the portion of dead lung and high temperature... the enlarged liver supports the high bilirubin. She could have an infection that spread hematogenously to the lung from the liver... Keep me posted on what the vets at TAMU say. |

| A high bili can be a result of liver fluke it is a worm found in the liver. I suggest asking about that as I have heard not many vets will consider it or have ever heard of it.
The lung I am curious on how they determined a part is dead |

| They still don't know what is wrong with her. She has not improved, insurance wants them to wait a few more days before approving having her put down. They are keeping her comfortable with meds. If she is put down vets are hoping autopsy will reveal what happened to her. |

Ultrasound can be used to determine necrotic or compartmentalized lung. |

| Just spoke with my friend, horse has not improved but is not worse either. Vet feels if there was going to see improvement they would hav seen it by now. Still a wait and see situation and keeing her sedated so she is comfortable.
Thanks for asking, I think a "decision" will be made this week - I will keep you posted. |

That is a lot of structures to go through for ultrasound.

Not really. If you know what your doing. That's how they map for thoracotomies. |
