My horse came up to the barn with a huge patch of hair missing from the side of his mouth up to his jaw. At first I thought he had the dreaded ring worm but it looks to be a reaction from a couple of bites that he was trying to scratch. One has a round, hard lump under the skin and the other has a hole and no hair around it where his skin made that nasty amber fluid. Once I picked it off, it looked like it had a small spot of puss (or possibly a shriveled up larvae?). I have recently given him a Zimectrin Gold and I had been putting M-T-G on the area (initially thinking ring worm). Any suggestions on what else I can do? Something to relieve the itch? Hydrocortizone cream? Blue Star Ointment? Thanks!

Your horse needs an antihistamine to stop the itching from the inside. You'll probably have to get it from your vet.

Good suggestion! Isn't if funny how you can't see the trees for the forest? I think I have some trihist.

That should do the trick. And if you still want to use a topical, I've used hydrocortisone creme before, but MSG should work just as well.
