Where are you located? Like others said with it being her first time being bred I would lean more towards a stud that is within driving distance. I also would go with an all speed stud for your mare vs a "barrel bred" I like Holy Bart.

I know a couple people with colts by him and they all rave about the minds on them.He is in alot of incentive programs and they are running a special right now. You and I think alike :)

I am breeding my mare this year to SMH. If that wasn't lined up, she would be going to John Fame.
Help me out here....SMH? I'm sure it's obvious lol.

I dont want to discount John Fame, because I'm sure he is nice.  But...of all the DTF sons out there there are several that would bring a much better priced foal.  If you were comparing a John Fame to a Eddie Stinson or Woodbridge or Firewater to fame who would you choose?

Hmmm...Missouri
Darrell Henry has some nice studs usually. I know he still has frozen semen from Dashing Val and La Jollas Gold....both studs are all run and are in state. They also should be able to recommend vets with knowledge of working with frozen semen.

I think it depends on your budget too. Eddie is $3500, Woodbridge is $2500. John Fame is $750 this year.

I think there is a full brother to woodbridge that is about $1000 that ran out about $50K. I think his name is Conn Creek, there is an ad for him in the new BHN.  Either way I think there are better options.

I like your bay studs pedigree. Looks like a nice cross.
I like the idea of a more compact stud to try to level out my mares length. For 14.1 she's long. Talked with a vet today and he recommended to put lights on her now. He also recommended a few or mare baby but it's still so cold out then.

It depends on what you want to do with the colt. If you want to futurity as a 4 year old yes an early baby is better so they have more time to develop....but if you futurity them as a 5 year old (or not at all) I would push it back. I usually have my colts late April/May when it starts getting warm out...plus I don't have the added expense of putting them under lights.

I agree, and dealing with lights is a pain unless you already have a good system set up.  Other wise I'd just wait until April or Early May.

It also depends on what part of the country your in. A early jan. or feb. foal in Arizona would be great. However I cringe at that thought of a jan. or feb. foal in the cold country we live in. It was 3 below this morning and I have seen way to many foals die from the cold or have no ears from being frost bit. So we aim for late april or may foals which also eliminate the lights deal. With lights, you really have to have a timer in your barn to turn the lights off and on. You have to be consistant with the light times and you really have to use 100 watt bulbs at the very least.
As far as John Fame goes.....I have a good friend with a filly by him. She is a very very nice mare! Mel Potter ( Sherry Cervi's dad) bred ALOT of mares to him. I think that says a lot and knowing the one my friend has, I wouldn't hesitate to have one in my barn at all. She did really well in the futurities this year, and is not a futurity trainer by any means. Not even sure she's ever even had a 1D horse before so they are very user friendly and talented. She also ended up the WPRA futurity 2D World Champion on that filly.

If you're keeping the baby and not planning to send to the track, I wouldn't bother with lights or an early foal. I'm also in MO and had my foal May 11th this year.
Not sure where you're located and I'm confused if you wanted to stay local or if that was just suggested by others, but I have seen Smokin Jo Twist and several of his offspring and they seem REALLY nice. Just a "local" option for ya!

shubug007 - 2014-12-31 11:37 AM I have several I like. I don't really want FG. I'm jus looking and looking. I don't want to break the bank on. Stud fee either. But don't want to breed to just anything. I love FWF, I'm loving ASOF along with several others. Lol

I thought you said you were wanting to stay around $1000 or under. Thus the horses I have been bringing up. ASOF is $3000 and I saw you said in another post your mare was long bodied. ASOF is also verrrrrry long so that wouldnt fit your mare unless you want a dashound. lol.
