Heart Murmur in horse
So 2015 has already been a rough start...Yesterday we took my 7 year old mare to the vet to get scoped for possible ulcers
(which they said she has
) and they inform me when they took her heart rate that she has a heart murmur and will have to come back next week to get a ultrasound of the heart, to see if she can continue competing.
So my question is...How many of you have ever dealt with a heart murmur in a horse?

I would take her to your veterinary college and get a second opinion.

It probably depends on what grade heart murmur the horse has.. the lower the better, the higher the worst.

My old barrel horse had a heart murmur. I can't remember the "stages" but he was the highest grade. They told me I would have to retire him and he would be a pasture pet. Ran him for an additional 7 years after that diagnosis, then retired him to a trail riding family. He is now 28 and still being used for trails and team penning.

Sidekick had one. It was never an issue. He had the type like many human athletes where the heart gives a little extra squeeze. It really just depends on the type of murmur.

They said she was a high 3 I believe they told me the scale was 1-6. It makes me feel better to hear that you guys have dealt with this and it wasn't career ending for the horse. They said they really can't tell me much about it until they do the ultrasound.

yeah i mean it really depends on what is causing the murmur.. sometimes its not a big deal, and other times it can be a problem.

Definitely depends on the murmur. I have a gelding with one...hes as feisty as ever. He is only 10 and would go crazy not to have his jobs. 14.2 hands small...head and heel off of him as well as slowly becoming more competitive in barrels and lots of hours in the hills. I have gotten to read when to rest him and to not over do it because if I do he becomes pretty lethargic. On days that he seems that way I have given him a little electrolyte with his pellets and a day off and he seems to do alright.
