My gelding has a big, long, thick and pretty tail. But it gets really tangled up and I can only brush it for so long before he gets agitated. this winter I'd like to put it in a tail bag to help keep it from getting all knotted up. How do you choose between the braided tail bag, and the pouch looking one? and how do you keep it on?

what is your procedure when you put a tail bag on? Ideally I'd like him to have one on all winter(obviously I'd take it off and tend to his tail) but I just wan to make sure it wont make it worse, or fall off!

I started to make and sell tail wraps after I had three horses get their tails eaten off by weanlings. I made one for each and left them in all summer just taking them out once a month to shampoo/ condition then put a tail wrap back on once dry. They held up all summer and I never had one fall off. All my horses tails grew about six inches. I LOVE Tail Wraps.

I just get one of hubby's old tube socks, cut the top down about 2 inches into 4 pieces.  Braid the tail and put it down in the sock.  Then tie the top into the top braids of the tail.

I wash it, braid it, wrap the braid into a bundle with electrical tape, and then put a tail bag over it. I buy the tail bags that are made out of that sleezy material and just look like a sock, essentially. Take it down once a week or so and wash it and repeat.

I use this method. I don't like the added weight of wet or muddy fabric, it will weaken the hair strands over time and cause them to break. While I don't leave it in all winter without taking it out and re-doing it once a week, I did test it out on my brood mare last winter (only redoing it maybe 3 times) and ended up cutting 6" of growth that was dragging the ground.

Heck yeah!  Just get some of the older ones, doesn't matter if they have a hole in them or not.  Cheap and they work!

Ok...this method looks very interesting! You say you took it down just maybe 3 times over the winter? THAT looks doable and it would likely stay in. The tail bags/tube socks seem to always get caught on something and pull off.

I think I'mm going to try this method!

I wanted to revive this and update ya TP .... I snagged a couple socks right after you suggested this.

Well, yesterday the SO was helping me feed the filly and happened to notice her tail in a tube sock.  The following ensued:

SO - WHAT the heck in on JJ's tail?
ME - A tube sock.
SO - MY tube sock?
ME- maybe ... but not anymore!
SO - Should I be concerned that you're taking my tube socks for horse things?
ME - Nope! (snicker) I only took the ones with holes!
SO - But those are my favorite socks!
ME - Sweetie pie, I borrowed it over a month ago and you said I could. Do you remember the conversation? We were working the dogs on the calves, I asked when we were putting them up.  Besides, this was a cheaper alternative to buying a tail bag.
SO - Well crap.  I should probably pay better attention ......

I do love that man!! LOL!

My hubby learned along time ago not to ask questions.  He's all about saving money so his old tube socks work perfectly.   Thanks for sharing your story.  Love it!

I used to braid my mares and keep it in a bag, only problem he tail is heavy and with blanket she would get urine in it. So, i used to just flick it in a knot when she woukd come in. Then it was dragging ground, so i flicked it in a knot and threw some vetwrap starting right at end of tailbone and down below knot she never got any urine and last march i cut vetwrap off and washed it and cut about 8 inches and tail was still one and it did not make it split ends. Did my gelding also, he has a thick tail and hard to keep braided.
