Sunflower seeds are an excellent protein and energy source They are common in horse feed rations here in Australia.
As they are high in protein 23% they should be limited to 500-750 gms per day per 500 kg horse.

I remember seeing a lot of people in past posts say they are great for gaining weight but are high in omega-6 fatty acids, which can amplify inflammation.  So I imagine they wouldn't be good for any horses with arthritic joints, but may be ok for otherwise healthy younger horses in small doses??

They are high in Omega 6, which can cause inflammation. I think the max dose is 1 cup per day, so a bag lasts a really long time. The horses really liked them, but I didn't see any difference in their coats; I fed them for about a year.  I think there are safer ways to get oils into your horse that are high in Omega 3s with smaller amounts of 6s, so I can't say I'd feed them again. JMO.
