Pikes Peak at Colorado Springs and take the train at Durango!!! http://www.durangotrain.com/
Not to mention... only 35 miles west of Durango, Mesa Verde was once home to the Anasazi cliff dwellers..

| We loved staying in Manitou Springs! Very laid back and fun to walk, and ride bikes. Great place to hang out, drink, and watch people! |

Location: Colorado plains standing on a goat head! | The Royal Gorge Bridge area just reopened after a wildfire destroyed most of the buildings a year or two ago. Well worth the money, it is just west of Canon City. There is also a train ride that goes through the bottom of the Royal Gorge.

They have a train ride through the canyon now? I remember going to the bottom and back up. Seeing the old train tracks and the Redwood water flume down there.. If you are going to do all this, ask around about Phantom Canyon. It would make a great all day drive back to Colorado springs from Durango. This may well be the loneliness road left in America. There use to be an man that lived in a tee pee at the side of this road toward the southern end, but I understand he passed.... I have a great "small world" story I can tell about that old man.. |

Komet, I would love to hear the story! Â
Well.. after my Mother died, my dad did a lot of.... well, just driving around the country.... Most of his time he spent out west... When he was young, he had seen and fallen in love with the area around Canyon City. On one of his forays in that area he discovered a long, one lane road that went north from just east of Canyon City to the old gold mining towns of Victor and Cripple Creek. Along this road lived an old man in an old indian style Tee Pee..
Dad made this trip several times and he would always stop to chat with the fella... He told me about him often.
Well.... after I got out of farrier school and began setting up my clientele at home, I met this young indian lady that was also shoeing in my area.... She called me up one day and asked for some help making some rounds that she need to get caught up on. During the drives between visits we talked about our pasts and she happened to mention an old friend that had originally taught her to shoe horses, before she went to school for it.... Turns out he lived in an old Tee Pee on some lonesome road in Colorado.. I never mentioned I'd heard of the man... Before or after..

Yes, they have trains that run from Canon City through the gorge and back to Canon City. They have some dinner trains. There was a tramway that ran from the top down to the tracks also, I am not sure if that is running now.
When we first moved here I had some work to do in Cripple Creek so I thought Phantom Canyon would be a good shortcut, it was not timewise. Though it was a beautiful drive in the fall with the aspens turning gold!
I don't remember a teepee, but it was only 10-12 years ago and I was rollin's trying to make up some time. Great story about the teepee! |

Yeah.. We took the tramway to the bottom and back.... 10 or 11 years ago you should have seen the teepee... it was set up about 4 or 5 miles from the southern end of that road.. on the west side of the road.. about 100 feet off the road....and no This was not a road you wanted to try to drive fast... Dad always said this was the only road he ever drove that had a bridge that had a curve.
