For anyone following the other thread I had posted, knowing that I had my hysterectomy 1/28, then ended up back in the hospital last friday night with a really bad infection...

Thought I would start a new thread.  Not only to update, but so the ladies with more life experience can share with those of us with less, on tricks of the trades of menopause and surgery recovery.

I had my first post op appointment this morning.  The doc said I am healing really fast and really well.  Which was surprising to hear considering I just spent several days in the hospital feeling like I was already dead :)

He did confirm what I already knew.  Getting an infection like I did after a surgery like that is not uncommon.  It has nothing to do with anything I did or didn't do, anything I overdid, or any thing the hospital did or didn't do during the surgery.  It is one of the very unfortunate risks that go along with that kind of surgery.

Obviously the staff at the military hospital I have been getting care at is very competetent (I say that in response to a few that were suprised that I could get an infection at a military hospital) or else I would not be healing as quickly as I am based on the circumstances.

Since I was on Lupron for the year prior to surgery, the doc is starting me on the lowest dose of HRT today to help with the hot flashes that have been a million times worse in the last few days.

What else have you guys found that helps?  I've read soy, flax seed, obviously exercise and the right diet, and have written up a list of herbs, though not sure I want to try to many things with starting the HRT.

I would appreciate input from you ladies.  You guys have been so instrumental in helping me cope and deal with everything that has happened in the last 26 months.  Through a miscarraige and two surgeries.  And for that I am grateful.

Glad you are on the mend. While I have not gone through what you have, I do know of a product that has helped my mom with menopause as well as a few of the ladies I work with. It is called Change-O-Life from Nature's Way. I know Dong Quai and Black Cohosh are both good herbs and this contains them plus a few others. Hope this helps.

It does!  Those are the two most common herbs that are suggested when I ask/research.

Haha..I am only 2 weeks post op so I am happy to have NO sex drive.  Hubby went with me to my appointment this morning.  So many people are way to embarrased to ask certain question.  So I wanted to show him that his was a darn legitamite one.  And the doc agreed. Said it was legitamite and very important.  He asked since my cervix was removed, if having sex could hurt me or tear the cuff or something (he is....um...quite.....anyways).....

Doc assured him that as long as we waited the minimum 8 weeks and the suggested 12 weeks, that there would be no worries.  He said he did have plenty of patients that did not wait and ended up having the cuff tear/rip which is very bad.

So yea...no desire to even consider sex here :)

Right now since I have been in medical menopause for a year, and now with the surgery, my hot flashes have gotten to where they last 10-40 minutes.  I don't always sweat, but they keep me awake.  He gave me the lowest dose HRT since I was on Lupron first.  And said we will see how it goes.

I think that is awesome that he went with you... most men don't understand or want to hear about it..
My husband didn't go but knew he had to wait... I was going through enough pain before surgery I sure in the heck wasn't going to chance anything before my time was up... that's just craziness..

Well, I hope the med's help with your hot flashes.. that would just drive me insane... LOL

I didnt have a hysterectomy but I did go thru menopause at 25, yes it was young. HRT helps with sex drive some but the main issue you may come to have is the natural lubicrant may not be what it was. If they put you on the HRT cream it seems to help more for when you start have sex again. I have night sweats now but I just started HRT again. I quit them for a long time due to not good for you to be on for long extending time (5 yrs). Make sure you get plenty of calcuim and vit d also. Osteopenia and osteoporisis can become an issue with post menopausal women. Im glad you are on the mend and healing fast.

I am facing surgery to have my ovaries removed and I am not at all thrilled about it. I had a hysterectomy years ago but both ovaries were left intact. After a rough patch with breast cancer two years ago, the doc wants them out. I know I am starting menopause already but I have major concerns. Being thrown into full force menopause doesn't sound appealing.....plus I am worried about what will happen to my sex drive......HRT is not an option due to the breast cancer. On the plus side, I won't have to worry about ovarian cancer but I am stalling because I am scared. UGHH...........
