We vaccinted all 4 horses on Friday.  Diva, my one mare, reacts every time she gets vaccinated. Because of this we only do every 2, 2.5 years.  She has reacted if we give it, if vet gives it or vet tech.  She always has.  Doesn't matter if in rump or neck.  I swear every time gets worse but then I balance that against her getting what I am tryingto prevent and I always end up giving the dang vaccine.  Progressively her neck swells more at injections site, hot, VERY tender and then it eventually disipates.  She's miserable.  Can I give her anything besides Bute to help her be more comfortable?

My other mare, Zoey, is just tender in the neck.  I feel bad for her too but at least she isn't as bad as Diva.  It isn't how we gave them as the other two horses are fine.  We got the vaccine from the vet.  Shouldn't be any worries about vaccine handling practices like I might worry about getting from a different source.

I'm very frustrated in that I don't want to keep making the poor mare suffer every time we vaccinate.  I already stretch them way out.  She is 13.  I am considering just paying the freaking money and getting titers pulled from here on out and only vaccinating if she is low on something.

I would pull titers and then if you have to vaccinate switch to single antigen vaccines.

Have you tried other brands?  I split mine up as much as I can (no 5-ways, etc).  Usually it is the adjunct they react to, and that differs with the mfg.  ex. mine reacted to pfizer SS, so this year I gave the merck and no problems.

I was told to give shots to horses that react in the pec muscle. That way they can still put their heads down to eat and drink.

my gelding does this as well although the last couple years hes been ok. He wont put his head down or turn it. and hes just plain miserable. I give him a bit of oral banamine after and he seems to be ok

I would ask your vet if its okay to give Dex in conjunction with it. He may say yes or no.. just a thought.

The whole idea with titers is this- no one knows what an acceptable titer is to prove the animal still has protective immunity. most vaccines only provide immunity for about the duration of the time between vaccines anyway. Maybe if more research is done and they pull titers, then challenge the animals by giving them the virus.. they can see what titer levels are sufficient.

Thanks ladies.  She is able to eat and we have a pretty big water trough so she doesn't have to bend very low to drink.  I buted her and will gently massage some DMSO on both of them after it thaws (dang stuff!!).  It's not life threatening or I would call the vet, but seeings as it is a holiday today...

Good point on the titers and their levels (I can't remember who posted that). I am calling in tomorrow to discuss this with her. I hate making the horses suffer to try and keep them from suffering.

I would give banamine (IV) at the same time you give the vaccines. I had a horse that would react to vaccines (stocking up badly, localized swelling), and this helped him. Also split vaccines up at different sites - ex: 3-way (EEE, WEE, Tetanus), WNV, Rabies/Potomac, instead of doing a more combined shot, where the adjuvant causes a greater reaction.

I had a mare that would swell with westnile shot given in her neck. We ended up giving it in her butt
