My sister and I are opening a small antique, furniture, home goods store. We got everything moved and displayed this weekend and today the builder stopped out to go over a few things. He loved what he saw and asked if we'd be interested in helping him and his wife decorate their basement. We would help pick out furniture (cabinets, display type items, not couches) and do the actual decorating, we are NOT picking out carpet and tile.

What is the going rate for something like this? I feel kind of silly asking this but this was not on our radar screen to happen so soon. :) Feel free to PM me.

Wow....good question......I think I would try to bill by the hours spent on it?  Unless he means literally find him the furniture and he will pay you for it, then commission would be on the sales?

There are several options.... one is no hourly charge but a 10% upcharge on everything they buy -- décor, furniture, etc. -- which they would buy from you whether your store or another store (you would make the purchases and then bill the items plus the 10% upcharge). Another is to charge an hourly fee....and that is generally based on experience.... $35/hour is the typical fee starting out - and also have the 10% upcharge on furniture/décor purchased. Or charge a higher hourly fee with no 10% upcharge. But if they are buying from the store you OWN, then I think you would NOT charge an upcharge. Just a flat hourly rate. Depending on experience and reputation, hourly fees for designers can get up into the hundreds of dollars per hour. And - as they always say - everything is negotiable, so depending in the size of the job and amount of items to be purchased, the hourly fee and upcharge can be adjusted....

If I was in your situation -- with a new store I was wanting to promote, I'd probably do a Promotional Fee to these folks for $25 to $35 an hour with the agreement that all décor items are purchased from your store - and no upcharge. Be sure to start a portfolio of the rooms, homes, your decorate to show potential customers.

Good luck! Have lots of fun!

Besides the fact I don't think ANYONE needs a $70,000 bedroom.....I'm not really princess material.

Thanks for the input. We were leaning towards an hourly rate with no upcharge on items they purchase from us. He was good to us when he built the building, we'd like to return the favor.
