Thanks every one. Looks like I can get 60 227mg pills for about $145plus shipping so 60 x 4.is 240 right? So say about $200 ball park for a years worth. Pretty reasonable

Swannranch - 2015-02-25 3:28 PM Anyone know what mg they use for daily use for horses?  I'm researching the dosing and pricing, looks like it comes in pill form but more than one mg. available.

I give 1/4 pill a day. 227 mg tablet. I just crush it, and mix it in a syringe with syrup. She loves her morning syrup. She meets me at her gate. I dont even have to put a halter on her. lol

I'm going to try this. My mare is absolutely no problem. When I started giving therm to her I would get a handful of feed and out the pill in. Once she was doing that I start giving it to her with a test. Now she will take just the pill from me. But I have one that no matter what he will not take a pill in any form. I've crushed it up then put it in a pill grinder and poured the powder on his feed. I eat around it some how. I tried mixing it in a syringe with Apple sauce that didn't work so I mixed it with water and a little sugar and forced him to take it like I would wormer.

1/4 pill is such a small amount you cant put it in a grinder. You would have nothing. The powder would be gone. I just use the small cheap plastic sandwich bags. Put the 1/4 pill in the bottom corner. Use my rolling pen to crush it, cut the corner of the bag off and carefully pour it in the syringe w/ the syrup. Then put the plunger of the syringe in. If she would just eat the pill from my hand I'd do that but she wont. She does love her morning syrup though. lol

Love the stuff, got my mare thru a fractured patella. However, the vets and I wonder if the reason CC developed the kidney stones was also due to the fact she was on this for long term, there were several factors but my other 2 horses also had those same factors. CC was the only one that had the Previcoxx on a long term basis. Just a heads up. Again, if I had to do it over, I'd still give her it, but I'd probably have pulled her off of it sooner or rotated it with days off.

Amazing stuff.  We give it and have for a long time, no side effects that we know of.  We do not crush it....just give a1/4 pill with a little bit of grain in your hand and not one horse refuses it.
I know it is not supposed to "cure" a horse but we have this one horse that has a knee issue and will limp without previcox.  We gave him a daily dose for probably 2 years...If we went off he would limp.  Anyway, we did take him off of it permanently because I was worried about the length of time we were giving it.  We were just going to give him a break.  Went back to using him and he has never needed it since

I have my 17yr old gelding on it. He gets 1/4 pill every other day (just to help with the expense) and he gets 1/2 a pill day before and morning of a competition. He has mild navic and arthritus. I use previcox instead of a daily joint supplement or bute. I defiantly think it has helped him.

I don't see how a 1/4 pill works when you're suppose to give a whole pill to a dog. My vet suggested 1/2.

It is my understanding that horses metabolize it differently than dogs, hence the smaller dose.

It has to do with their kidneys or liver I believe.. Out vet said to never give more than a half a day but if you are doing it everyday just to give 1/4

See that's what I've been wondering about.  Should have asked that initially LOL.

Im struggle with that, and determining if I want vitamin/mineral supplement and Previcox or vit/min supp and joint supp.......dilemmas dilemmas....

It's the difference in metabolism between horses and dogs. I found the easiest was was to poke a slit in a carrot and tuck the pill in there...

Hehe, yes. My boy still gets Formula 1 Noni w/ added HA every other day and Red Cell twice a week. I still also give an IM shot of Acteyl D Glucosamine every other week during competition season. Pretty inexpensive maintenance and he feels great! (sorry for spelling errors, typing quick!)
