Since it feels as though it has been forever since I have been able to get the rig off of the sheet of ice that it is currently parked on to go make a run, I thought we might have some fun critiquing one from last year! Obviously, we stepped off of the third barrel, but I'm sure there are several things that will be noted. I've got a pretty thick skin, so pick away at anything. Don't like my shirt? Let me have it! Too much pink? No such thing in my world! lol

Just a bit of background. This is a (now) 12 yr old mare. I patterned her in the middle of her 8 year old year. She is in my program, but belongs to an owner who graciously allows me to run her from time to time.

It's a nice run but I think she'll run faster if you fluff her tail out more..

Other than stepping off of 3rd, I can't see anything. It looked good to me. Not too much pink...that is the color I use on my mare! Most of the time I don't even look at the rider, I'm always watching the horse, so I had to go back and reply to see what color your shirt was, LOL.

She didn't shut down at the third barrel. The stepping off was totally my fault. I have a tendency to give her just a bit too much pocket at the third and end up squaring it off, which gets her a bit flat on the backside. You can see me pick up and open my outside rein on the way to it because I'm a chicken. Keeping her on the line that I did had her on a bit of a right angle as we got to the turn. She's a long strided mare and when she made the move to turn from that approach, it just got us a bit short behind it, forcing her to take a bit of room leaving it.

I see.

When driving to 3rd move 12-18" closer to the barrel then she can finish cleaner?

Along those lines yes. A straighter approach would have allowed her to get the room on the backside that she needed to be able to finish the turn. Her hind end was actually in a pretty good place, I had just led her front end out a bit too far off the line.

I agree with a straighter approach, riding her deeper into the pocket and closing up the pocket more on the third, "waiting" on her just a hair longer before starting the turn. I think with those changes, you would have a near-perfect run!

She must have been well fed.  Horses usually do better when they are.
