Our mare was diagnosed with ulcers on Wednesday and I think the vet said to go ahead and run her this weekend to see if the meds are working.
Does this sound right?
She seems better but still ouchy. |

| Honestly if I have one who is showing symptoms of ulcers, I will put her on omeprazole, and continue to work her.
If I am going to run her I will double up the day before, the day of and day after.
I will also make sure she has hay in front of her 24/7.
It may prolong her healing but won't make it any worse in theory |

| Thank you, it just seemed a little odd to me. |

| It really does depend on whether she is reacting to the ulcers in a negative way. If she is then I would personally wait two weeks. I am currently treating a gelding who ran fine, no gate issues, no weight loss, no extra water consumption, nothing to say ulcers until he blew backwards and slammed the arena wall at the last barrel race. I hoped off to snug his cinch up, and he yanked me off the ground he went back so suddenly. Worst part, he dislocated the dock of his tail, and now has more than just ulcers to heal from. After that incident he lost tons of weight in a week, his ulcers flared so quickly.
That said I have a friends mare to run until I find another horse, and she shows every classic ulcer symptom but she still goes and does her job as happy as can be. I'm continuing to run her while she is also being treated. |

We just finished a month treatment of your stuff about two weeks ago and she wasnt even sore before, she just looked sucked up and needed help with her top line. Within these 2 weeks she is showing all the signs of ulcers even though we have her on FORCO. ...horses |

| I would wait 2 weeks but I am one to always err on the side of my horse and not what my needs are. I worry about creating mental issues if I ask them to run knowing they are hurting. I treated a gelding for ulcers who was showing no physical signs but one morning had dull looking eyes and refused his grain. He responded immediately to meds and was eating again after 3 doses but I waited to haul him. I decided to take all of mine off grain since that was the first thing he refused and seemed to be what was irritating the ulcers and causing him not to eat. I feed soaked molasses free beet pulp for volume and calories with Renew Gold and alfalfa, they also have 100 aces to graze. I have been feeding this way for 4 years and horses look and feel great.

| We run futurity colts while treating. Older horses we've gotten in we may give them time off while treating. Depends on severity of symptoms and if we have entered up anywhere. |
