Location: Ft Worth TX | A friend of mine has a horse with radia; nerve damage and a bone bruise on his front forearm, below his elbow. This is a vet diagnosis via x- rays and exam. Do they have good days and bad days- as far as lameness goes? How long should it take for rehab? what things will help progress rehab? What things would cause it to slow healing? What do you know on nerve damage?

| My old gelding fell this time last winter and sustained nerve damage somewhere in his hip and back. Although he improved with massage, acupuncture, chiropractic work, etc he was never right again - and when I say not right I mean drug one back leg out to the outside and the other one shifted more towards the inside/center to make up for it. If he rolled on the flat he couldn't get up, if he rolled the wrong way on a hill, he couldn't get up. Mom had some wicked determination to make him better and I am 9 hours away with little control over the situation. He passed this past July of what we believe was a heart attack (he was 30).
I'm obviously not sure how bad your friends horse is, but it would be really hard for me to put one through severe nerve damage again. |

| My horse had a damaged radial nerve, the vet worked diligently to get all edema resolved around surrounding tissue, and I believe he injected stem cells into the radial nerve, two months later no deficits.

Location: North MS | My horse's nerve was severed in a fall. He was briefly cast in his stall and we were able to pull him away. He stood 4 times after that and never again. Get the horse on extremely high doses of vitamin E. Also Microlactin (duralactin supplement) reduces inflammation around nerves according to several published studies I read (journal studies). Can't hurt. My boy was rapidly improving until that 2 hours. You just can't watch them every minute. |

| Ultra Oz ultrasound. Then supplements for nerve and blood flow/anti inflamatory. I use a rep for the ultra sound she is great to deal with. They have a rental program. |

SG!!! My mare paralyzed her radial nerve in Sep of 2014 and still has things that don't make her 100%. Can I just put her PHT blanket on under her rain sheet? She is on pasture. I usually only use for hauling. Also, getting her back into vet tomorrow as I want to pinpoint exactly what is wrong. Could be something torn in there as well. |

Location: Beggs, OK | If it's a recent injury I had one respond miraculously well to laser therapy. He had three treatments each a couple of days apart and he was walking sound by the weekend.
He wouldn't even put weight on it when I brought him in and wasn't able to bring the leg forward at all. He had been kicked right in the point of the shoulder by another colt. |

Location: Texas | depends. if its damaged below the elbow, the deficits won't be as bad as if its higher up like in the shoulder region. If they sever the radial nerve- very very low prognosis. If the nerve is just damaged, it can re-myelinate in time, but it takes a lot of time and I would do a lot of PT. the radial nerve controls the muscle groups that advance the limb. Without those muscles, the leg will sag and drag behind them. if bad enough, they no longer have control to bear weight, as those muscles extend to straighten the leg out.
I would give a lot of vitamin E, whatever rehab the vet suggests, and some prayers. With dogs, they usually amputate the leg if the radial nerve or brachial plexus is damaged beyond repair. horses don't have that option.
the fact that its nerve damage at all means= SLOW HEALING. I wouldn't rush anything with that rehab program. has the horse had any atrophy of his muscles yet? |

Location: Ft Worth TX | Sadly this horse was euthanized- he laid down and had a micro fracture that turned into a big fracture when he got up, he broke his forearm it was a very sad deal |
