What is the best way to get your new horse acclimated to his new home and accepted by the herd?

I always put them in a small pen for the first week to adjust to our schedule, then I throw them to the wolves... Once the pecking order is situated, all is good! If they start getting beat on to much, I'll move them around until I find the right buddy for them.

quarantine for 2 weeks, longer if needed. Then put them in neighboring pastures so they can get to know each other over the fence, leave them there for a week, unless they are doing well then sooner. then I'll throw them out with the herd, if they are being really bad they'll be separated and I'll move the bully around until I can find the right match.

at the same time I firmly believe in a good herd environment and making sure it's confidence building for all. If horses that are much more precious to me than the new guy are getting beat up or moving down the pecking order the new guy will go. I couldn't imagine being forced into a situation with one jerk horse that is constantly mean day after day and expect my horse to have a good attitude when I want to use him.
