babiemox - 2015-03-23 1:40 PM If you like leather reins I would stay with them. have you tried putting a piece of duct tape on them where your hand needs to be? I have seen some people do this...with all the colors they offer now it's easy to see your spot and the tape will feel different so you should be able to feel if you have it if you don't want to look for your spot...just an idea.

I haven't tried that, but I think that's a great idea! Right now I run in a 5 plait braided leather rein and ride in a flat leather rein. I don't love the feel of my braided reins but they do have good grip.

Good advice, I think I'll stick with leather - but now which ones since these new laced reins have been so well liked I'm even more confused! lol Maybe some Ed Wrights with duct tape.

WYOTurn-n-Burn - 2015-03-22 3:23 PM  I have one pair of reins by Martin and the rest are Ed Wright reins. To me they have a good feel for just about any bit, heavy or light.

How long are the Martin reins? I can't find a length listed for any of their barrel reins.

I know the Ed Wrights are 8' which I like since you can have them as long or as short as you want. Just curious how the Martins compare in length.

Teskey's carries several similar reins to the ones in the picture, but I have also been looking for the THICK round cotton style instead of braided flat cotton

Anyone use one of these reins? How do you like them?

  • Ed Wright leather reins

  • Martin mohair blend reins with knots (the white ones with the leather knots)

  • Martin leather reins with blood twist knots

  • Shallow Creek laced leather reins

I love leather reins with good weight, but I wonder if some type of knotted reins would be more helpful with my hand placement since I have a tendency not to slide my hand down the rein enough to help on the backside of the turn.

I borrowed my friends Martin Mohair white reins one year at a weekend barrel race. Really Really liked them. I was gifted some leather Martins (not the ones you mentioned, but the leather laced ones?) and so far really like them as well. However, if I wasnt gifted them I wouldnt have spent the money. I am cheap. I have several pairs of some round white cotton Champion Brand reins that I have had for years and love.

Great! Do you know about how long the leather Martin reins are that you have? 6', 7', or 8'?

If I remember correctly they are 7'

Do the Martin mohair feel anything like their mohair cinch??

Does LaTricia have her own reins?  I've always wondered what she ran in!

I LOVE my Ed Wright reins. But I host a clinic every year and I go through all that he has and pick the ones that I want. I usually buy a couple of them since my roper boys seem to think they need them also :) I use colored electrical tape on mine where I need to put my hand. Ed actually put it on my first set and I have done it from then on.. You wont go wrong with them :

I love my mohair reins. they do stretch and if you sweat a horse they are soaking wet in the hands and I don't like that. but just for trail riding they are super comfy.

I have the Shallow Creek reins and I absolutely LOVE them! I ordered the wide (3/4") short (74") ones. They are just perfect for the horses I ride.  If you had a really big, long horse, you may want the medium. But one of my mares is 16 hands and they work great on her.

I would go with the Shallow Creek reins all day long. Excellent feel and quality and they are only 35.00 bucks!
