My mare has been on previcox for about 4 years it keeps her sound and I love it! Due to military move I've had 3 vets deny me the prescription and now where I live I cannot find a vet to give me a prescription he suggest Equioxx im unfamiliar with Equioxx. I'm so pleased w previcox I hate to change a medication any advice or ideas? If I had an old arthritic dog I would use the dog to get the prescription lol

could you get your old vet to write you a script and order from Valley Vet or something?

Equioxx is the same as Previcox, it's just the Equine version and much more expensive. The other poster had a great idea. Get a script from your old vet and order it or have your old vet ship it to you.

Vets can get in trouble for prescribing Previcoxx for horses. Previcoxx (FDA approved for dogs) and Equioxx are the same medication, but Equioxx is FDA approved for horses and is a paste. They both have the active ingredient of Firocoxib.

Thanks but I have now found a vet who will give previcox to me. I've went through a lot who won't and a few that will. Btw my orginal vet wouldn't give it to me because she hasn't seen the horse in over a year. And yes I know it's illegal

Glad you were able to find someone to help you....It's ridiculous that Equioxx is 10X the cost of Previcox.  I can get Previcox for $0.64 a dose....that is affordable to keep an older horse comfortable even if you have to give it everyday for the rest of their lives.  $7-10 a dose is just not feasible.

It was my understanding that several months ago the manf. basically acquiesced and said it they didn't care if Vets prescribed previcox for horses.
