Does anyone have any suggestions for a barrel saddle for a high withered horse? I am currently riding in a Triple Creek but I can only get about 2 fingers between his withers and the top of the gullet. I feel like it should be taller. I have a Double J Pro and it touches his withers. If I could I would just go to a tack store and have him fitted but there is none in my area. Thanks for the help.

Shiloh saddle, I've had luck with ALL of them, but a contender will give you the most. I used to shim this horses back to fill in the hollow.

This one I did not shim, I sent wire molds to Stacy and had him raise the gullet an inch from the standard tree, it would have been fine stock.

Shimmed on the back Ed Wright made Shiloh

You need to try to find a older Martha Josey barrel saddle, they seem to fit horses that have the higher withers.

My horse has high withers and the Meleeta Brown saddle fits him well.

Lynn McKenzie Nueva or Lynn McKenzie Special. The Special would be my first try on him. It would have enough shoulder flare for those big powerful shoulders, higher at the wither, but still have enough room for the strong muscular back. Check out her saddle fit videos on youtube.

My gelding is a lot like the one in the picture but I think mine's withers may actually be a tad bit higher. His back is fairly big so I was having troubles with finding one that wasn't to narrow in the bar angle where it pinched his shoulders and would be wide enough to fit his back.n The steeper angled bars accomodatated his withers but didn't allow for width in the shoulder area. I came across a Billy Cook model 1527 and found a Billy Cook contoured saddle pad that has a slight built in pad just around the contoured area . I recently purchased another high withered horse so I did some research and found that the specs of the Billy Cook 1527 and 1524 are the same except for the cantle height so I bought a new 1524 so I would have two saddles that generally fit and do not pinch.

The crown c regular tree, with a specific gullet size would work.

You can send pictures to Brian and Tracy they will walk you through their saddles and philosophy.

They also have a demo program which I believe is free

Double j I believe the #10 tree is supposed to fit horses with more rock in the back (a higher wither)

Tod sloan probably the b2 tree would fit, unless he has huge shoulders.

I have found that the csi pads can also prevent saddles from dipping down or hitting the wither. The csi pads are contoured to the horses back, my horse with a nice set of wither the pad sit approx 3 inches above her wither. The flex plate also gives enough support the saddle doesn't push down or pinch (unless the saddle is way too small/narrow)

I am currently using a Kelly Kaminski flex 2 by Circle Y flex tree. My horse is a wide, but this horse looks more like a regular. Call Circle Y. They are super friendly and always willing to help, 8 other people in my district just purchased this same exact saddle after trying mine, it has memory foam seat, gel under the tree on the side it sits on the horse for extra comfort for them. My mare was a TERRIBLE horse to fit, this saddle has fit nearly everything ive put it on. No complaints. Higher withered horsses are tough, goodluck!

I have awesome luck with the Double J Pozzi Pro STANDARD Fit for high withered horses. The fit is great not to mention they ride fabulous. But, Before you go changing saddles maybe you should try a different pad. I love the Wyatt Ranch Pad, It comes with an insert and is contoured for high withered horses. It will lift the saddle up a tad off the withers. Off course when you saddle your horse run your hand under the front of the pad and lift it up off the wither before you tighten the cinch.

Just some ideas

I've had the best luck with a Bob M treeless.  I tried so many saddles and they all seemed to pinch or hit him in the near the top of his withers.  The treeless has freed him up quite a bit.  No shims, no special pad and no more dry spots.  Not to mention, his turns are more fluid now too.  Good luck.

I have an old double j charmayne james, round skirt, saddle that I use on my high wither/shoulder horse and he LOVES it. I also use the old thin charmayne james professional saddle pad as well; with a shim. I tried a bunch of different saddles/pads and he hated them all. I would just use a "thin" pad and shim it before buying a new saddle IMO

I'll check...I know my Coats seemed to be about 6 3/4" and that's pinching him too. Everything I've tried has been pinching him
