Location: Gainesville, TX | Are you looking at a juvenile prospect, a four year old futurity prospect or a five year old? Yes, definitely for the first, maybe for the second, not really for the last. |

Location: Kentucky | The weather is so funky here that I won't breed my mares unless it's a late April or May baby. I wouldn't think it would "hurt" the value, but maybe a hardcore futurity perrson will over look for a Jan baby instead. |

Location: Texas | I haven't ever had anyone ask me what actual birth date any of my babies were..
i sure try to have them foal in April or earlier but one of my mares is NOT cooperating and I will take whatever date I get to get that stinking foal. Sure is frustrating me right now. |

Please rethink that, I know your a little further north than I by momma horses, goats, cows, ewes all seem to milk better in milder conditions. When you get our crazy Texas heat the little ones don't seem to do as well. |

I agree!! The date of birth doesnt matter to me as much as size/conformation. We have a May 30th colt (3 year old Zan Parr Bar/Driftwood bred) that I would feel perfectly comfortable patterning right now. Too bad he's my boyfriend rope prospect. |

Agree,
I have one right now(the last one) that was not wanting to cycle after she foaled. Finally got her to cycle and bred last week.
If she did not settle she will stay open this year because I have zero use for a may/june foal.

Location: When you hit the middle of nowhere .. Keep driving | I usually go for early may foals due to my climate. I did breed one for an early March foal this year because I want to futurity it, now I sit and hope that the winter is mild and not that long. We get -40 still in March at times... even in a barn it scares me.
ETA: It does depend on the location, and what year you want to futurity.

| It depends on the mare.
I have some mares I won't breed on after May 15. I have others I'll breed on until they take.
As long as the baby is bred to mature early, you should be fine.

Location: East Texas | I raise anywhere from 10-13 babies a year, and sell most of them before they are 2. Out of top studs and top mares, and I have never had anyone not buy a baby because it was born in May. Heck 3 of my mares due in April still have not foaled. And yes these babies go to Futurity homes and most run at 4. I do not mind April/May babies at all. In fact we don't ever want them born before March because the weather in east Texas is very unpredictable, and they do have stalls, but I hate keeping them locked up for weeks due to icy weather. Some of our best colts to run and win were April and May babies. |

Location: Montana | It doesn't bother me, but it is cold up here usually at least through March, and often snows into April, so later babies are more common. My coming 3 year old is a June baby, and I hope to futurity him as a 5 year old, but he is a good size and is growing well, so I don't see any issue. I might rethink a July or August baby, but April, May, or June (or earlier) are all comfortable months, and wouldn't make me think about a colt otherwise. |

I have no choice. i followed that process last year and decided to use her rebreed this year for an early foal. Had her due for a late Feb 2016 foal and she slipped before day 25. So if i don't get her in foal this year, I lose everything.
ETA- she IS getting bred today so if she takes she is still going to have an april baby. I've just been battling recurring uterine infections that I've never had to deal with before so this is throwing me for a loop. She's never done what she's doing right now before. If she doesn't take this time around I am going to switch mares and pray I get my slick baby.
