My vet recommends the anti-venom injections for my dogs, and it wouldn't surprise me if they get bit, but are the injections that helpful?  I had a larger dog bit on the nose two summers ago, when we got her to the vet they said we could pay $1000 for the meds, or jsut give her a few days and she'll come back around, which she did.  Her head was swollen and she looked miserable, but she's fine now.  The vet said that with the anti-venom vaccine they will still get a swollen head and a headache- so is it worth it?  Do you all get the vaccine for your desert dogs?  Thanks again in advance!

Know a lot of hunters that get them for their dogs. They swear by it. It basically gives you time to get to the vet and more likely for your dog to live if they were to get biT. They also do snake avoidance classes that seem to work not cheap and does need refresher course here and there but have seen that work also. All in all I believe its cheap to do usually under 40 for vaccine and 75-and up for class, usually refresher cheaper or free depending on who gives the class.

Thank you!  I saw the snake avoidance classes too- I bet those would work, I should look into that more.

Yes I recommend them. We live in west TX and all 5 of our dogs have been bitten by rattlesnakes, even our little house dogs that are only allowed in our fenced back yard. The ones who had been vaccinated the swelling was cut in half and seemed the down time and feeling bad was also about 3 days instead of 5 or more. All but one was bitten on the head nose area the other one was in the middle of her chest. We have already killed one this year under the second barrel and I just missed a big one that got under the hay tonight when I was feeding.

I live in Wyoming and had one bit 2 summers ago.  Thank goodness she didn't swell up like we thought she would.  The vet here told me if I ever had it happen again to give them Dex until I could get to the vet.  I cannot remember how much she said to give so I would check with your vet on that.

Another odd thing we have had NONE rattle like they use too. We witnessed two of the dogs that got bit and the snakes never rattled just struck. They don't seem to warn anymore. Everyone has said the same thing and blames it on the wild pigs so watch where you step we have placed about 5 hoes all around the place because we kill so many every year and none have given the warning rattle in about 5 years until you actually touch them with a hoe or 22 shell - ha ha

My brother's hunting dog got his anti venom vaccine... it saved his life. He was hunting last year and bit on the paw by a rattler. His dog continued to hunt for him all day. Finally the dog's paw swelled up. They took him to the vet and his dog was treated. Without that vaccine, he would've lost his dog.
