I rescued a puppy about 2 months ago that a guy was giving away for free on a resale page on Facebook. Someone had dropped her and two others off on his porch and he didn't have the time to take care of them. I wasn't looking for a new puppy as we had just got a lab puppy but after talking to the guy I ended up taking her as a foster. Well it didn't take long for my two year old daughter to claim her so she is now "ours". Not knowing her background we went ahead and started shots and deworming as if she had none. Everything was fine until about 2 weeks after we had her. She started having uncontrollable diarrhea that had a LOT of mucous in it. Did tests and she came back with coccidia. We treated her and she was back to normal while on the medication. After about 2 days of coming off the meds she started back up. We sent a stool sample to the lab and they came back saying no worms and no coccidia but her "bad" gut flora was really high. We went ahead and did one more round of antibiotics and kept her on FortiFlora. She again did well on the medication. She came off the antibiotics and did well on just the FortiFlora. "Well" being no diarrhea however her stool was still pretty soft and not completely formed. No mucous though. I ended up buying Forco Saturday and started her on that as I was almost out of the FortiFlora. Sunday her stools were actually formed and I thought maybe this was the trick. I had to get the pellets because the dealer here doesn't sell the powdered. I think I may have been giving her too much because Monday morning she woke up dry heaving. She is still VERY active and no fever. I didn't give her any yesterday so her body could filter it out. I ended up crushing pellets this morning and giving her the lowest dosage recommended for dogs. She is always very ribby and looks sucked in. We feed her Blue Buffalo which is what our lab puppy is on as well. He has been fine through all of this and is very healthy. I am thinking about trying Blue's Freedom formula. We are looking at putting our lab on the wilderness formula for higher protein but I feel like that may be too rich for her. Then again I stop and wonder if maybe she is sensitive to Blue in general. I think the guy who had her first fed her Purina and she had normal stools when I got her.
I guess I'm just looking for any suggestions or thoughts. She did dry heave again this morning but again she is VERY VERY active and is still eating normally.
We think she is a pit/wire haired jack Russell mix if that helps with any thoughts. I know some breeds have more sensitivities. |

Location: Usually on my horse | I would go back to basics with her. Start her on plain chicken and rice. Let her stomach settle. Once she is doing ok on chicken and rice gradually add your dog food back in.....little by little on a daily basis. See how it goes.... Good luck......you sound like a really good dog mommy.  |

Location: London Ontario | My GSD has a very sensitive tummy. He is on a chicken free dog food(allergic to chicken) and anytime he gets an upset tummy we give him pureed pumpkin and pepto if its really bad. Be sure the pup isn't getting a lot of different treats or scraps. We buy the same type of treats each time so he is semi used to them now. Good luck! |

I would try that too and add either yoghurt or pumpkin puree.

This... went thru the same thing with my lab puppy. Boiled some rice and I just used canned chicken breast.. cleared him up and I slowly added his kibble back in. Sometimes those higher end dog foods are too rich for a pup with a sensitive gut. I ended up feeding mine the TSC brand called 4 Health... it's reasonably priced and grain free. I haven't had a problem since. |

| We had something along those lines with our aussie...anything she ate she would either puke or get the runs..So we ended up (at vets recommendation) switching to a grain free dog food, and adding Forco. This had been going on for a long time, like a year and a half of trying to figure out what food she could eat, and everything. Now that she is on Forco, she is back to eating normal dog food, her tummy is good, and no more puking and diarrhea. We feed half a tsp per 10lbs. If she is going to travel with us, we up it to 3/4tsp per 10 lbs. I would suggest getting her on a bland grain free diet, but still feed Forco to help her gut flora balance. Powder is best to feed, but pellets will work if crushed up. Then slowly try and add in regular dog food, a little at a time and see how she does. |

Good Idea to test for EPI if it doesn't clear up.
My puppy got the runs on blue wilderness really mucousy. I switched to taste of the wild with salmon and sweet potato puppy food she is doing really well on that. She also does well on homemade dog food with pork and sweet potato I just need to find a local place to get the right vitamins to mix in.

| My puppy had the exact same issue. 1 TBS of canned pumpkin am & pm in food. Dogs LOVE IT! I was SO skeptical at first but it worked magic. I swear by it!!! |

Location: Memphis, TN | Thank you for all the suggestions! I'm going to try a few of them and I picked up Blue Basic today to start her on. I'll definitely ask my vet about EPI. I can never get a good picture because she is so busy so I took a video today. I had the lab in my lap half the time but I think you can see what I mean about her being ribby and sucked up. She is the white pup. Also any guesses on her breed mix for fun? Oh and she does have a cherry eye that we will have corrected when she is spayed. Needless to say she's been a little money pit and we just want her to be healthy.
