Whenever you jump on this horse bareback he runs off crow hopping and bucking. I know it's a fight or flight response but he won't do it with a saddle or if you slide on bareback. How do go about training him to not be scared?

Climb on him in a stall. I've done this before... Stand on something and lean over his back, adding weight slowly... then ease your leg over his back... all the while talking to him softly..

I had a horse that did that! Some people say try bareback after you've just worked them hard and they're tired. But I just slowly worked at it. First just hanging over her with my legs on one side and my upper body on the other, then asking her to walk in a circle and then trying to get her to walk straight. When that's working good try lifting a leg over but not sitting up straight, but be really careful about hitting his back end with your foot! Then walk a circle, then try going straight. Somewhere in there I tried sitting up but for some reason that always freaked my mare out! Eventually she loved going bareback! Be careful though! It's not worth it to get hurt, I took her out of the pasture one day, made it about a mile from home when she got spunky and hopped to the side, which made me slip to one side and my mare just lost it! She ran and started bucking, I fell off, got a concussion, and had to walk home. It was completely my own fault but it still sucked!

I've also heard of mounting them in water, since they can't move as fast it's harder for them to get you off and they realize that it isn't a big deal. But I don't know if you have access to water where you could try it

What's the point in plopping up on him bareback? If he is good to ride saddled leave him be....

If you can slide on him easy bareback and he is fine... why would you want to "jump" on him?  Sounds like maybe it hurts him, to me, anyway.

That was my thought? Why do you have to jump on him? I wouldn't want someone jumping up on me either. I think sliding would be just fine..

Some people can jump on a horse from the ground just by standing next to the horse and swinging your leg over. I'm not talking a running jump- he's okay okay to mount bareback if you are on a step stool and slide gently on. He flips out if you "jump on" or try to mount from climbing the panels.

Its just not safe for him to be doing this. Just trying to figure out a safe solution.  Riding bareback is good for a riders balance

No point it's just the fact that you practically have to tiptoe onto him. I'm not tall so if I'm mounting a 16H horse from. Stoop I have to jump up over the horses back then swing my leg over. I cannot be the only person who has to mount bareback like that? Am I? Maybe I've just lost it or am terrible at explaining?

I understand what you're saying, I'm the same way I have to do a little bit of a jump thing even from a mounting block or something else taller just to get on.

Him taking off like that to me is indicative of a bigger problem, if you have to tippy toe around him just to get on what's going to happen when you're on and something goes wrong or you have to adjust or something else happens.

I don't know how to fix it but understand where you're coming from!

If he's not being spooked then the sudden weight might be hurting something. Or if the rider has been coming off then he knows how to do it now..

I'm a 5'3" short old fat lady that rides 16 hand horses, and breaks colts.

I mount from the fence or a stool. I always get on as easy as I can out of respect for the horse, and to make sure they don't get sore. I've never really expected my horses to put up with my roughness or banging around- I need to be a better horseman and not give them a reason to dread me getting on.

I always prep my horses and rub on their back before I get on as well -- they would be brushed before they would saddled, it should be any different when I ride bareback.

I understand what your saying, although I don't have any advice.
I also agree with you that riding bareback is great for teaching balance. I think everyone should learn how to ride bareback first, then add a saddle. It teaches you how to actually ride, not hang on and bounce around in a saddle, then learn to ride.  JMO

It is not safe for you to be damaging his back each time you do this.

There are so many nerves, and muscles that tie into the back, by you getting on rough, he is telling you it hurts.

I am 5 ft nothing and I ride 16 hand horses bareback, I will use fences, trees, farming equipment, pails, anything I can use to get on a horse safely without injuring or hurting them.

There are other ways to work on balance besides riding bareback, dropping stirrups, holding hands out to side, strengthening your core helps tremendously on balance.

He won't let you mount from that high up is my point it scares him- I'm looking for drills to help with him being comfortable with a rider mounting like that.

Sit on a fence or another horse and spend some time rubbing his back, and hanging a leg over without actually getting on. I do this with all my colts prior to getting on to get them broke. Then the next step is sliding on gently.
