Jack mentored Mike Smith. Â Mikey was Jack's roommate when he was starting out. Â I can tell you that what you see is the real Mike. Â He has such a smile and a nice guy. Â He's just a cutie. Â Gary Stevens is an outstanding horseman and one of the greatest. Â Kent Desormeaux is another great horseman and a good guy. Â I'll be pulling for Gary and Mike tomorrow.Â
Oh that's so great to hear that Mike Smith really is who he comes off or appears to be in interviews ect!! I've always been SO impressed by him! Even being as successful and accomplished as he is, he's always seemed to have integrity, and just a genuinely honest good person. Truly cares and respects the horses he rides. Like when he held up Shared Belief in the Charles Town Classic, in doing so really reduced greater injury. Im a big fan.
Also I just wanted to say thank you NonaY for sharing! Love to hear the stories! |

Like when a jock like Mike Smith goes to Oaklawn or somewhere to ride in a big race, he will not get on any horses before. They don't want to risk the chance of getting hurt before the big one. Younger and less experienced or hungry jocks will get on horses but my husband wouldn't when he had to travel for a big race. At least he wouldn't after he won the Preakness.
Your husband won THE Preakness? Get out of town! Is he famous?
that's what happened to jackie a cheap claimer he had 5 qualified for all ameican.
i know tracey misses him . |

| NonaY - 2015-05-01 5:58 PM Yes, he's famous and also famous for his drinking. He's OK now but I will tell you that the racetrack can screw up alot of people. He was riding races when he was like 8. He won the Preakness in 1982 when he was 16. He went wire to wire with Shoemaker running second. He was on Hee Haw and on T.V. They made such a big deal out of the 16 year old jock who wore a cowboy hat in the winner's circle. Jocks are like rock stars on the track. Everyone wants to be their friend or just be with them. I can tell you that 90% of them have dabbled in drinking or drugs. Jack never did drugs but so many others have. Just this morning I was ranting at my shoer "How the hell can they put a cokehead into the Hall of Fame? What kind of message does that send? They better put PVal in then!" I see jocks put on a pedastel and I don't get it. OMG the women. So stupid. They wait for these guys to come out of the jock's room. You're married to a rider, you have to keep your eyes and ears open. Women throw themselves at them. Just like bucklebunnies who chase after bullriders. Pathetic.
i must have been navie as all get out i never saw that at los al or bay meadows course i was a gallop boy in am pony girl at night

Were you at that party at some apartments across the street or I think it was Foster City when people initially were getting tossed in the pool and then they started throwing buckets of water INSIDE the furnished apartment? I don't think whoever rented that place got their deposit back. |

Location: In Ky following Barrel Races & Walker hounds. | The track wh***s at Ellis dont care if they're jocks, trainers, pony boys, gallop boys, hot walkers, whatever they can get! yuck!!!
As far as jocks go, Calvin Borel is very nice, I had a couple of win pictures of him on my FILs horses from Keeneland and one of my friends who works in the jocks room got him to sign them for me, and he told my friend to be sure and let us know he was very sorry to hear he passed. That meant a lot, my FIL thought a lot of Calvin and his talent. I hated not getting to see him ride in the Derby this year. Pedroza is always good to deal with also. But a new favorite around Ellis is Diadel Osario, hes only around 19 I think, young kid, but super talented. Would not suprise me a bit to see him in some big races in a few years.
Nonay- Loved that video!! That is so cool! |
