G got kicked right on the point of the hock on March 2nd.  She's been alternating her time between stalled at home or at Dr. Honnas' and she just isn't getting healed.  Dr. Honnas says these injuries just suck and does not want to do any surgery yet.  The tip of the bone is 'frayed' but no pieces broken off.  The swelling is just the same as it has been.  Bute has been reduced to 1 or 1.5 grams twice a day depending on how she's walking.

Tomorrow G is getting a laser treatment and I was just wondering what to expect.  How did it work for you?  How often does it happen and for how long?  How much does it cost?

I had really good luck with it.  My mare impaled something into her hind leg 3 years ago.  At first the vet wanted to put her down as bones were chipped and she was a mess.  I said I wanted to try to save her for at least a broodmare. Once that decision was made the vet asked if I wanted to try laser treatments.  She had just gotten a machine and had only tried it on a dog to that point.  We started 3 days after the injury and her leg was swollen from the stifle to the hoof.  After the first treatment the swelling was 1/2 and after the second treatment the swelling was gone.  We also quit pain killers after day 4 as she was moving to much from no pain.   We did 6 treatments roughly every other day or so.  I'm convinced the laser helped in pain and speeding up recovery and healing.  I'd do it again in a heartbeat for injuries.  Cost for me at the time was I think $250 for 6 treatments but I know I got a deal as she was using it for experimental.  I highly recommned laser treatments.

By the way this mare is now 95% sound.  I bred her while she was healing and got a gorgeous 99 Goldmine baby off her last year.  We have now started riding her.  She won't be a performance horse for reining or barrels but she is definitely sound enough to be a pasture horse for moving cattle etc. for us and she's going to be quiet enough for grandkids down the road.

Well, 24 hours after the first treatment and I haven't noticed any change.  I set up two treatments for next week and hopefully I will see something by then.
