My horse can be an on the muscle turd the first run we make at a jackpot.
If it is a double show he is consistently better the second run, quieter, and overall more tuned into listening. I really feel like it has to do with him getting the adrenaline dump from the first run.
Long warm ups and lots of trotting and loping don't do the trick, I suppose crushing him through a warm up might but we won't have that option nor a second run at rodeos and single races. I think breezing him out would be helpful, but again not always something we have room to do. I usually try to hit the grand entry so he can feel the ground, but if we're in slack that's quite a ways off.
Does anyone else have a horse like this? This is a seasoning year for him and I so I'm open to trying some different things. I had thought about trying the Oxygen Focus paste in situations where I have no other options
(because it is spendy, unless it's his magic crack cocaine and it pays for itself
).

RE: Horse that runs better the second time and single races/rodeos
I'd venture to say that 95% or more horses run better times their second run or third, etc.. Because most horses will clock faster the second run is the reason that, in our state, Florida, NBHA races it's required that the Open be run first...that way Youth and Senior riders don't get a second
(better
) run on those that only get to run once. The only time most horses run their best the first time is when an extremely ratey or setty horse is able to leave 'em standing the first run but then tends to get even settier with each run and hits barrels.

I don't disagree with that and our nbha is the same way. However since I've notice a change in his focus level for the second run, I'm hoping that there's an option to help get that mental state for the first go.
My oxygen dealer has recommended giving the Relax paste a try.
