A good friend is letting me get back to barrels on one of her mares. My problem is I have anxiety issues and the mare has trust issues on the ground. She is really jumpy and will set back but once you are on her she is good. For example, you must have your back turned to her when saddling her and she wants you to just fling the saddle up, no placing it. She is a pill to get on, but I did manage to overcome that today. I will have to start over tomorrow I am sure, but that's no problem. What are some ground exercises I can do to gain her trust. My friend had to use a new farrier the other day who was rough with her and she thinks this is the problem. I know that I am most likely part of it to. She is really cool to ride, though.

You need to gain her respect and then you will gain her trust - I like Clinton Anderson's ground exercises for this.   Even if you do not have a round pen there are things you can do on the ground with her - google Clinton Anderson ground work exercises.  It will help.  Good luck and welcome back to barrels!!

Ditto Clinton Anderson. He's got some stuff up on YouTube. Follow the desensitizing parts too--sounds like she could use it. The main thing about it is that you do something she doesn't like--such as tossing a saddle pad on her back. You toss it on her back, pull it off, toss it on, pull it off. If she moves away, you follow her. You don't stop doing this until she stops moving her feet and relaxes (Clinton says until they cock a foot, lick lips, blink, or stand still for 10ish seconds). You apply the pressure (saddle pad) and once you get what you are looking for (relaxing) you ale away the pressure. This was the biggest concept of his that made the lightbulb go off. Start with something smaller though, like tossing the lead rope over her back. Watch his videos--you'll see.

This does not sound like a trust issue to me -- it sounds like a horse with absolutely no manners. Any horse can learn to be still for grooming, saddling, etc. Good ground manners are a must in order for the rider/handler (and the horse) to be safe. Clinton Anderson......yes.
