Location: Texas | I live 10 miles southeasst of San Antonio, TX. With all the rain and humidity we have had this past month, my saddles, and all my leather tack is getting mold on it. The saddles in the tack room are fine, these are all in my trailer in the rear saddle compartment, side compartments and even the front compaartment(dressing room). My trailer is a '99 Sundowner. Any suggestions on how to remove the mold besides just wiping it down, or what I could wipe it down with to keep the mold from coming back?
The next step is to replace all the rubber gaskets around the doors.. I have even bought the little things to put in a damp room to help absorb moisture, to no avail.

Location: Texas | I live in N Tx and am having the same problem with my tack as well. Opened up my trailer yesterday to find several pairs of reins very molded over just a few days. I don't have any answers, I just wiped them down but I'd like to hear others input as well!

Location: CTX | Ugh, now I need to check my tack... I am in CTX.... When I last checked it Tuesday night it was still good, but with the downpour we've been having I would not be surprised if it has mold on it.... What I used to do with that is clean it real good with saddle soap and then put leather oil on it. Since moving to TX is has been a decade or so since I had mold on tack... |

Location: East Texas | An old saddle maker that I know told me to go to the Dollar Star and buy a bottle of the "Orange Cleaner". Spray it on and wipe it off. Works like a charm!

Location: Red Raiderland | I'd also like to know as we have had this problem every spring and into summer. I usually wipe it down with my saddle oil but I'd also like to know if there is anything to put on them to prevent it from happening at all. |

Location: Gainesville, TX | Just wash it with saddle soap and oil it. Make sure and check that none of the leather is cracking or weakened. I've had some green stuff on my saddles in the trailer a couple times from this kind of weather. We just washed them and oiled them. They were fine. |

I can always wash and oil but I think we want to know what we can use to not allow it to happen in the first place. All my leather tack is covered right now, with this gross mold, in the tack room. Has anyone tried a dehumidifier in their tack room? |

I wonder if the white vinegar would dry out the leather? |

| Vinegar works but its stinky.
I have DampRid containers all in my barn because the humidity is a horrid in the summer. Couple that with the summer showers and its spore city.

I would pull everything out of rear tack and wipe down with something to kill the spores and let dry and put everything back - then buy about 4 of the damp bags to go in rear tack - dont leave saddle blankets in the rear tack too - put in horse area on your dividers to dry

Location: Nebraska | I had that problem up here last year when it rained a lot. I ended up putting a fan in the tackroom and didn't have a problem the rest of the year after I had cleaned everything using my regular stuff. |

Location: Heart of Texas | Same problem. I cleaned it once with mild detergent and water. That did not work. Are you getting black or green mold. I"m getting the green mold. So i cleaned my tack this time around with white vinegar and water. 50/50. Put it in a spray bottle and wiped it down with my hand. If you use a rag you could spread it more. So far so good. I did not re-oil it as i figured with all the humidity, oiling it would just help the mold grow more. I NEED my tack to dry out a bit. |

This works and is easy, helps keep the mold from coming back as well. |
