Location: Texas | How bad are the mountains in Flagstaff, AZ? I may be doing this for my mom. She'll be flying. I love her, but spending 23 hours in a vehicle with her isn't wise. lol I've driven in the mountains in California, have no issues pulling trailers, and am not afraid to drive, etc. But my husband is worried about me driving a 20 ft UHaul through Flagstaff. I don't think it will be a problem. I won't be alone (well, it may be me and my 15 year old daughter, plus my trusty side arm). I know how to do basic mechanic work, change tires, etc.
Any advice? |

| You shouldn't have a problem at all. We do it all the time.

Which HWY are you driving? When I go threw Flag it's not bad at all. There's a few miles where the road is rough and it's better to stay to the left side, but not real windy and steep.! |

Location: Texas | Most likely hwy 40 out of Amarillo. If I go through Lubbock I will still pick up 40 in New Mexico.
I haven't decided if we will fly back or rent a car to drive and go to Carlsbad on the way home.
I can handle rough roads, I'm glad to hear not real windy. That was more of my concern.

| It's pretty flat across I-40 through Flagstaff. There are a few "mountains" but it is all freeway. The roadway can get rough between Ashfork and Kingman, by rough I mean the patchwork. You'll get off the interstate at Kingman and now that there is a new bridge over the Hoover dam, there is no winding two lane road. It's not bad at all.
ETA: When are you thinking you might take the trip? Flagstaff does get snow in the winter.

Location: In The Snow, AZ | Â I live in flagstaff. It can get pretty windy. There's only one area on the 17 tho that has a "crosswinds" danger area. But we've never had any issues pulling a 4h gooseneck up and down. There is the rough areas already mentioned. Simple lane change. My hubby drives a 26 foot box truck penske for work. Goes from flag to sedona, Winslow, Williams and munds park every week without issue. Just be conscious of weather conditions and you won't have a problem. |

Location: Stephenville, TX | IMO it's a pretty easy drive. I've pulled my 24ft bumper pull cargo trailer that route a few times there and back (in December by myself) with no problems. It's not a tiring drive to me, so most of the time I drive straight through from Stephenville to Vegas only stopping for fuel and quick food. Other drives I've taken (like over real mountain ranges) tire me out and I HAVE to stop to sleep, but this one is easy. Stretches of it can get a little desolate, but I don't let the fuel gauge drop below 1/4 tank and never have a problem finding fuel whenever I need it. Cell service is pretty decent too. Have a fun trip!! |

Good to know about the fuel. That was my next question. I may end up just using my three horse bumper pull to move her. She will only need a 17 ft uhaul truck and I think I could get everything in my trailer and my expedition. I'd be more comfortable driving what I know. But my husband isn't so sure about letting me come home with an empty trailer. I think he's worried I will come home and it won't be empty. |

Gas Buddy is a handy app that shows you the locations of the nearest fuel stations and latest prices at each one also.
Your husband's concerns regarding the empty trailer are probably valid LOL! |

So buy a horse while you're there! No empty trailer … problem solved! LOL |
