How do you deal with them?? My goodness gracious do they hurt like a B. Had an accident on my gelding on wednesday, and have 5 broken ribs. I've tried wrapping them, I was given pain killers but they make me so sick to my stomach that I can't take them....and I can't even sleep!

They are not fun!  And to cough, sneeze or breath just hurts like a beotch!  Did you try taking the pain meds with some food?

Yes I ate first before taking the pain meds, but didn't help...came back up. I've been taking ibuprofen but it only helps just a bit.

There are different pain medications with very different properties. Let the doctor know how those made you sick. They may be able to offer an alternative drug that you can tolerate...and at least take so you can sleep.
I cannot tolerate anything that has codeine or a derivative of it. But there are other good choices.

Ouch you poor girl, thats just aweful. Hope that you get to feeling better soon. I cant take pain meds either they make me really sick to my stomach, when I had my Gallbladdler taken out I was so sick because of the pain meds. Doctor told me to take Advil because its easier on the stomach. So maybe give that a try.

See if your doctor can get you an rx for 600 mg ibuprofen. 1 pill lasts 8 hrs. I just recently got kicked in the stomach. Thankfully nothing was broken, but I have a liver injury. I can't take pain medicine either. You may try trammadol if the ibeprofen isn't enough. They gave my trammadol in the hospital and it still made me sick since I hadn't ate in 2 days. I have taken them before with no issues though. Luckily my pain has been mild, but hopefully one of those will help you. I have also been sleeping with a back on track no bow on my belly :)

All I've ever done with broken or bruised ribs is binded them to help with the movement. And I had an episode with a gelding over Mothers day and ended up with a crack in my pelvis, bruised ribs and very deep tissue bruising. I wrapped myself in a BOT blanket to help with the soreness, binded my ribs, and alternated with ibuprofen and Tylenol until the pain was manageable. Good luck, ribs suck no matter how many times they become injured.

NSAIDs such as ibuprofen are not the greatest idea, as the research from 5 yrs ago was showing one Motrin administered to someone with a fracture delayed healing by 6 weeks.

Just having spinal surgery and the surgeon saying I couldn't have any NSAIDS for 3 months, guessing the research still stands.

When I fractures ribs a girdle really helped me, it was about 3 weeks before I could ride, then I could only ride one

When I had 5 broken ribs, I slept in the recliner chair with a pillow cushioning my side. When I walked around, I kept a small pillow tucked against my side also. Did not tape them - don't think they do that any more. I did take the pain meds, but yes they do have side effects.

Good luck.

When I had surgery pain meds also made me sick to my stomach. The doctor gave me a prescription for nausea and that helped.

Pain meds make me sick too so I feel for you. Do not wrap and sleep in a recliner. The Dr did not prescribe anything for me when I broke three ribs. What was he thinking?? My suggestion is alternate Tylenol and Ibuprofen every two hours. This is what a Dr prescribed for a friend with a broken foot.

Wrapping or binding rib fractures is really not a good idea, because it actually makes you more prone to pneumonia. One reason why rib fractures are so painful, compared to other fractures is it is impossible to immobilize a rib fracture because as long as you are breathing they are moving. Broken arms and legs are usually immobilized, so they don't tend to take as long to heal compared to ribs. Sometimes rib fractures take up to 6 weeks before a person is pain free. You might get away with wrapping them, but I wouldn't advise it. The best thing you can do is get good pain medicine. 5 ribs fractured takes a hell of wallop. Sometimes Tramadol is a med that works when meds like Oxycodone or Hydrocodone make you too nauseated. Another strong pain med that might be tolerated is dilaudid. You can keep some zofran ODT on hand that can help with nausea. After 10-14 days your pain will still be there but you ought to manage with over the counter non narcotics at that point.

Years ago a colt fell on me and I wound up separating 3 ribs from my sternum... Ibuprofen and deal with it. Hurt like a sum buck for 4 weeks, then just hurt for about 3 more.

I can't take pain medicine either because it makes me so sick to my stomach, so I completely understand what you're saying. Praying you're better able to tolerate the pain soon.

I actually quit taking pain meds cause I would move more then I would hurt more. I used ice / hot tropical instead and had more relief from it I slept tilted up on the arm of the couch with hard pillows if you have a recliner even better 6 weeks or 6 months is not long enough for the pain to go away . I still have mine. I had 4 broke. Leave the animals alone till then. NO LIFTING!! Good luck.

I broke 3 last year on labor day weekend the only thing that seemed to help me was PanAway. It is from Young Living Oils. I mixed it with coconut oil and rubbed it on them. See if you can get your hands on some the quicker the better.

I've broken a lot of different things but ribs were absolutely the most painful.  It was many months before I could raise my arm on that side without pain.  The recliner was the only place I could sit or sleep.  Good luck and I hope yours heal quicker!
