Has anyone else had this problem? If so, what did you bed with? Did any specific brand work better for you?

SG and I had this discussion at Diamonds & Dirt, but for the life of me I can't remember what she said. Seems like she had found some shavings that were pesticide free? She found that the shavings she was using prior had pesticide or something like that in them. Gosh I cannot remember. Is your horse allergic to the dust or to the actual shavings?

I think it's the actual shaving because he always has the worst reactions after I put new shavings in his stall. The ones that I buy now are the small pine shavings from Tractor Supply. I haven't experimented with any other brands yet.

Have you looked into Cedar Fiber....that may be an option. We have to use it for our show calves.

I know there's one kind of wood shavings that you cannot use with horses......is it cedar? Might google that to be sure.

I had one horse break out in hives. Took awhile to track down the cause of it because I had been using the same place to pick up bulk shaving forever. Finally figured out that the sawmill changed the lubricant they where using on the saw blades.

Don't use shavings for that horse and use straw or hay.

Mine was allergic to how dusty the shavings were. I bought some that were triple screened and left her door open with a little rope in front so she couldn't get loose.

Thanks everyone. I was going to try the cedar ones also thinking that maybe it would help with the bugs since it's been so wet this year. We clean stalls twice a day and he is fully covered in a fly sheet and neck wrap and a fly mask. He's also turned out in the pasture during the day. I've almost got it under control, but still seems to break out in hives when I put new shavings in the stall. Thank you for the suggestions.

could be the shavings are getting under the sheet.. to..and causing irritation.I have found that shavings , sheet and sweat dont mix.. and horses can get hives.

We use straw for my mare with allergies. I'm super careful about what straw I buy too.. Make sure there is minimal dust and NO mold. I refuse to buy anything that's been sitting uncovered or is over a year old to try and minimize my issues.

try a different brand, or a different type of bedding. take notes of how your horse comes out of his stall with each type!
Mine has a dust allergy
(or is allergic to every sort of bedding you can find.
) The thing that works best for him is keeping his pelleted bedding watered down well. also I can use things like straw or anything "low dust" but keeping up with his urine also causes us problems as he drinks and pees an awful lot and most low dust types of bedding are nearly as absorbent as the pelleted kind!

Yes! I had to mat and then throw cedar down for the soaking.

You are exactly right. they spray it down for bugs and i have one horse that cant do it. The tractor supply pellets seem to work ok

) More expensive of course! You can get them at Tractor Supply!

A friend of mine has a mare allergic to shavings and they use straw to bed her down with no issues.
