I have a 5 year gelding whom rode better as a 2 year old. It seems with age he is getting more spooky, nervous and plain onery. When he came back from being broke as a 2 year old I loved him, rode great. As time went along he got worse...he has an attitude.

Anybody have any thoughts as what is going on with him?

I know this might be a blanket response but have you looked into treating for ulcers? Maybe your horse is being ridden more and trained more now which contributes?

Desensitize him for a few days just like you would a 2yo, it woudnt hurt and could help.

Its hard to say not knowing his training program or if he is on one and routine .. some horses mature and figure things out to get away with stuff.. some may have issues  ... after coming home from a trainer horses usually do ride good..

I have had put him in round pen for about a week with hay, water and fed twice a day. Today I worked him in round pen for about 30 minutes, I also changed saddles. He rode better but still has an attitude about him...but I have wondered about ulcers..do might start him on some aloe vera juice.

Maybe send him back to the trainer? Or take some lessons from them.

I would start with checking for ulcers and a thorough nutritional evaluation, including trace minerals.

I like to do groundwork every time before I ride younger(ish) horse, I don't with my 20 year old. Not just putting them in a roundpen and sending them around, but yielding, backing, etc etc etc or as Clinton Anderson would say "getting them to use the thinking side of their brain". I truly think it makes them so much more focused, willing and respectful. They probably had a ton of this before coming home as a 2 year old.

As a 2 year old they are easily molded. As a 5 year old, they start to have a mind of their own.
Sometimes they seem really broke as a 2 year old, but if you just ride them around like a truly broke horse, they start to think they may not really have to listen. I agree with the above about working the young ones like they are young, even if they seem "born broke".

Feeding twice a day isn't enough, this may contribute to ulcers, horses need to eat frequently.

Also aloe Vera doesn't cure ulcers, and doesn't soothe the stomach for long, you will need to treat with omeprazole if it is stomach ulcers, and hind gut ulcers the horse will need a diet change.

Also what has the horse been doing for 3 yrs, has he been ridden constantly? If he hasn't then his attitude is the owners fault, the owner needs to be the alpha, on the ground and in the saddle, if you haven't kept up with discipline then you have taught him his attitude is okay.

As they age they develop more thoughts and ideas and may push back to test your leadership, may get more nervouse as more is expected or as others have said, may develop stomach issues under pressure.

What did you vet say?  I'd have a complete evaluation done.  Blood, eyes, flexion, fecal, etc.  I would also consider testing for EPM, Lymes and PSSM - one at a time of course.

When was the last time you've done ground work with him? Is he sound? What are your training techniques like? Are you rewarding positive behavior and addressing the maladaptive behaviors?
