Location: Never in one place long | My friend is going to adopt 6 barn cats from our animal shelter... our plan was to keep them locked in her barn for about 5-7 days until they associated it with home then leave doors open so they could go in and out at will..It's supposed to be mid 80's-100 for the next 10 days and didn't know if these cats will be ok in a barn with that kind of heat? She can probably leave a big fan on and they would have access to fresh water and food. Anyone have any idea on this? We don't want them to die of heat stroke! They have all been inside as of now, I am planning to take them later at night so it'd be cooler then. |

haha! I do it all the time at my house, they work it out! It helps that they are all spayed and neutered so no tom cats trying to fight each other!!

Location: SE Louisiana | To answer your question.. I would not lock anything up in this kind of heat without a mister in front of the fan. Cats don't sweat. A fan will just blow hot air into it's face... Been there, done that... |

Location: Arkansas | I'm shocked there is a shelter that will knowingly let you adopt "barn cats". Most of the ones around here won't let you adopt cats unless they are going to be kept inside. |

| Our animal shelters here are kill shelters. If you pay the fee, they don't ask any questions. Rescues are a different story.
If the cats are feral or semi-feral, they will need to be contained longer than a week, or they will be gone.
To answer your question, I do think it is too hot to be locked up right now.

| Do you have hay stacked in your barn? Whenever we get new cats we will leave them in the carrier for a couple of hours sitting up in the hay. Set some food and water outside, then release them. They usually run and hide in the hay and then will eventually start making their way out. We usually have better luck with younger cats or tamer cats, but if they know where the food is there is s much better chance of them hanging around. |

Location: Never in one place long | Our shelter has a TNR program- trap Neuter-release, most of these are feral cats that would either be euthanized or go to a barn or house in the Country. That's why we want to lock them in there for a few days. We don't require cats to llive their lives inside unless they're always been an inside cat or are declawed of course! i actually think cats are way happier living free outside to hunt and roam! That's what they're made for.
Comet-I have a big barn and I have feral cats and tame ones that I've let loose in there. I don't have any cats in my house!
I'm going to talk to a few vets and see what they say about it! I'm so torn over it... seems to be a LOT of differing opinions! I always thought it animals weren't directly in the sun and could get to shade and had fresh water they'd be ok? I've never had troubles with mine? |

 Own It and Move On
Location: The edge of no where | How big is the barn? I'd try going in there a few times about 2-5 in the afternoon with it shut and see how hot it is inside. I'm betting with lots of water and a fan going, if it's a good sized barn, they'll be just fine. Are these kittens or feral kitties? |

It's probably 25x40?? Decent sized. Two of the cats have been indoor outdoor and are tame, 2 ferals and the rest are fairly friendly. The Vet staff there said they think they'd be ok, that if it's too hot for humans, probably too hot for them but I know barns get hot but usually out of sun so not totally unbearable. They have things to hide in and water and will have frozen water bottles for them to sit by. Supposed to be 100 tomorrow but then weds and thurs 80s. if got too crazy hot, I guess we could just open the door and let them lose and hope they stick around... |

I may be missing a few details here but our shelter is a high kill shelter. A lot of trapped cats come in also, some wild... some with collars on. They do have a barn cat program for the cats through a rescue, but if you "adopt" a cat it goes through a different organization and it has to be indoor etc. I believe if you get a barn cat it won't be some of the cats that are better suited as indoor pets. |
