The place where I keep my horse USED to provide shavings/grindings for the stalls. Then we ran out and he hasn't restocked because he's lost quite a few boarders. I made the mistake of BUYING shavings because I didn't want my horse on hard pan ground and he has YET to order more. But now, he doesn't even shake the poop piles. He literally just scoops up the poop and the shavings and dumps it. We're talking serious waste here. And the bags of shavings aren't cheap. It feels like he's throwing away MY money! I mean I get with shavings you're doing that anyways, but this is excessive. He's not even trying to conserve. I'd offer to just clean my own stall but that would mean less work for him!!! I'm at a loss. You can't really ask him either you know? Bahhh. I won't leave over it because he feeds good hay and its low key and works for my situation but still--it's frustrating. I can't think of any way to say what I want without being rude.

I know it sucks but the only solution is to clean your own stall.  Maybe tell him a few extra dollars in your wallet would really come in handy and ask him if he will discount your board a little to clean your stall yourself.

We always end up cleaning our own stalls because help will either shovel all your shavings out or they will pick two piles out a day and leave the rest.  When we have to have help, we use rice hulls because they are cheap and hard to shovel out.  Rice hulls are obviously not an option in your area so I would clean my own stall.

Instead of shavings, buy and bed with wood pellets.  They work really well and there will be much less waste.

Don't the pellets fluff up?  I guess I could clear the whole stall and dump them everywhere and fluff them up to that dust...hmmmm

If he provided them before, but isn't now then I would be asking for discounted board.

Right?!  But now he makes us feel like he's doing us a favor because he's raised board for new people coming in so it's just awkward.  Maybe if the shavings thing continues I'll bring up a discount--especially if he's just throwing them away like he is right now.  Luckily my horse gets turned out for most of the week so my shavings get saved but...still!!!

Hey, it's the price of doing business so if he had them before he needs to still provide them. His loss of other boarders is not your concern. Did you sign a contract? Either way I would talk to him about the situation and maybe go over stall cleaning 101.

Yes, they fluff up and work really well., just add water. You can throw shavings over them as well...
They last longer and make stall cleaning a whole lot easier...

yep that is exactly what I would be doing. Especially since they are what $4-$6 a bag, and if you use 4 bags a week....that adds up.

My mare gets 6 bags on a base stall, plus add in another bag every 3 days.... So we would go through a lot of money quick if we wasted shavings like this guy. haha Luckily, everywhere we stall USUALLY provides free shavings.

I would ask him why he no longer provides free shavings. Tell him that if he wants to stop losing boarders, maybe he should provide better care for the horses.

Sounds like my husband who will sometimes help me clean stalls. Of course I can't and don't say anything because he's helping me, but I'm so conscientious about shavings it drives me a little nuts!  I totally appreciate all his help, but I can relate to what you are saying.

I don't think he can afford it.  I mean, he does feed good hay, so at least he's got priorities.  But there's only myself and another gal that are there daily.  The other 3 boarders keep their horses in outside pens where shavings aren't needed.  So it's just for 2 people and he doesn't feel the need to do it for just us.  I need to say SOMETHING soon.  Either pick better or cut me some slack on board because I pay $9/bag for premium shavings because they are cut more fine and he requested that we buy the smaller ones as to not WASYE THEM.  I feel like I've been pranked and taken for a ride.  =/
